Wheather I am capturing the special moments of your wedding day, making memories with your family, helping you to record your interests, taking photos of your products or your work, making your portrait or “papping your party” I will be there for you. A lovely surprise visit from Helena Powell

We had an unexpected visitor at Mill Tye Gallery when Helena Powell popped in to say hello — and brought her completed charity weave with her!

Created with contributions from visitors during Helena’s recent residency at the gallery, the weave carries with it the marks of many hands, conversations and shared moments.

It is now on its way to the framers before being auctioned in support of the East Anglian Air Ambulance — a wonderful next chapter for something that began here at Mill Tye.

And Helena certainly isn’t standing still either!

She is now preparing for London Design Festival, followed by The Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair in Manchester in October, before taking part in an exhibition with the Society of Designer Craftsmen in November.

It was wonderful to see her again and hear about everything that lies ahead.

We wish Helena every success with the next stage of her creative journey and hope it won’t be too long before she finds her way back to Mill Tye again.

Captured Light — coming to Mill Tye Gallery

A little behind-the-scenes glimpse as the gallery begins to transform for our next exhibition.

Captured Light brings together the handcrafted chairs of Dan Hussey and the paintings of Honour Surie, united by a shared response to the Suffolk landscape.

Furniture and painting sit alongside one another, exploring craftsmanship, place, material and the changing qualities of light that make our Suffolk landscape so distinctive.

Here’s a time-lapse of the team at work as the exhibition begins to take shape.

A Moment in Shiftless Shuffle History

There are some events that you photograph knowing, even as they are happening, that you are documenting a little piece of history.

The launch of Perry Louis presents Shiftless Shuffle: 25 Years of UK Dancefloor Jazz felt like one of those moments.

I first began documenting Shiftless Shuffle in 2012, and since 2017 I have had the privilege of being its official photographer. But the Shiftless Shuffle story began long before I picked up my camera.

Looking around the BBE Store, so many chapters of that story seemed to be gathered together in one place, DJs, dancers, old friends, new faces and people who had travelled considerable distances simply because being there mattered.

And at the heart of it all was Perry, surrounded by people who had come together to celebrate something he has spent 25 years nurturing, developing and sharing.

As a photographer, these are the moments I search for. Not simply what an event looks like, but what it feels like to be there.
The dancing. The hugs. The laughter. The friendships. Perry signing copies of the album. People losing themselves in the music. All those little moments of connection happening around me.

It was also incredibly special to see some of my photographs become part of the album itself. A huge congratulations to Christos Parry, whose wonderful design brings Perry's story of Shiftless Shuffle to life, weaving together the music, photographs, people and history.

These photographs are my perspective on a very special evening and another chapter in a story I feel incredibly privileged to help document.

The Final Day — Helena Powell at Mill Tye Gallery

Today marks the final day of Helena Powell’s residency at Mill Tye Gallery and Arts Centre.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the privilege of documenting Helena’s residency through photography, film and conversation — watching not only the work she creates, but the process, relationships and ideas developing around it.

For this little film, I wanted to capture something I’ve become increasingly aware of while watching Helena weave...

Rhythm.

The repetition of the loom.

The movement of her hands.

The sounds.

The concentration.

The momentum that gradually builds.

Helena told me that she loves weaving to music because the rhythm helps carry her along and speeds up her process.

As I edited the film to the beat of the music, it made me think about how much of creativity — and life — works in the same way.

We practise.

We repeat.

We learn.

We connect.

We make mistakes and try again.

And gradually those repeated actions become skills, relationships, confidence and momentum.

We don't necessarily know where they will take us.

Sometimes we simply have to trust the process, follow our curiosity and keep moving towards the things that feel meaningful.

That is one of the things I have loved about documenting this residency. It hasn't simply been about photographing finished pieces of work. It has been about observing a creative process as it unfolds, the conversations, experiments, connections and moments in between.

So as Helena's residency comes to an end today, perhaps this isn't really an ending at all.

It's another beat in the rhythm.

Another thread in the story.

And the beginning of whatever comes next.

What a wonderful way to celebrate Helena Powell’s residency at Mill Tye Gallery!

This week, Helena made the front page of the Suffolk Free Press, followed by a fantastic feature inside telling the story of her residency, accompanied by a selection of my photographs documenting Helena at work.

I've really enjoyed spending time with Helena over the past few weeks, photographing her weaving, hearing about her creative journey and watching the conversations that have unfolded between Helena and visitors to the gallery.

One of the things I've particularly loved about documenting an artist residency, rather than simply photographing a finished exhibition, is seeing everything that sits behind the work.

The experimentation.
The materials.
The conversations.
The years spent developing a creative practice.

And the resilience, curiosity and determination that keep an artist moving forward.

As a photographer, these are the stories I'm most interested in capturing – not simply what something looks like, but the people, processes and experiences behind it.

I love creating an image bank that can help artists, galleries and creative organisations tell those stories and share their work with wider audiences.

Seeing a selection of those photographs used across the Suffolk Free Press feature – and one quite literally putting a spotlight on Helena's work on the front page – was a lovely moment.
And the good news is, there's still time to experience the residency for yourself.

What a wonderful surprise this morning!
I went to pick up the local paper and was absolutely blown away to see Helena on the front page! What a fantastic feature celebrating her weaving legacy and everything she has been doing alongside her exhibition.

The double-page spread inside is such a lovely piece, highlighting not only Helena’s own work and passion for textiles, but the workshops she has been running and, perhaps most importantly, the way she is sharing her knowledge with people of all ages — teaching others to weave, encouraging creativity and passing on that love of traditional textiles to a new generation.

It is so special to see a young artist and maker being given the opportunity to share her skills and inspire others in this way. Helena is showing that our young people have so much to contribute when they are given the encouragement, space and opportunities to do so.

A huge thank you to the wonderful team at Suffolk Free Press for your continued support of our young artists and makers, and for helping to shine a light on the incredible things they are achieving.

We are all working together to support these young people, celebrate their talents and give them opportunities to grow, create, teach and inspire others — and this is a perfect example of why that matters.

Shiftless Shuffle 25 YEARS & COUNTING!
We are absolutely buzzing as we continue our 25th Anniversary celebrations!
What a year it has already been so far:
In February, we were honoured to welcome Dj Shuya Okino-san as our featured DJ, followed by the incredible Nicola Conte at our 25th Anniversary party in June a completely sold-out session at 229 Basement Club.
And now… this Friday marks another very special milestone.
The release of the very first Shiftless Shuffle Dance Floor Jazz Compilation, in association with Impressive Collective and released on BBE Music.
Compiled by me, with sleeve design by Christos Parry and photography by Jacqueline Mellor, this album is something I’ve been incredibly passionate about, and it is a huge honour to finally be able to share it with you.
The compilation will officially be available in record shops, and there is something very special about being able to put this music into your hands for you to take home, play, enjoy and hopefully become part of your own collection.
To celebrate this very special milestone, we have three very special album events coming up:
USA- BROOKLYN — SUNDAY 16TH AUGUST
Our first official album celebration takes place in Brooklyn, New York, at:

The Community Weave Continues...

What a wonderful weekend!

A huge thank you to everyone who visited Mill Tye Gallery and became part of Helena Powell's community weaving project. It has been a joy to see so many people gathering around the loom, learning something new, sharing conversations and adding their own few rows to this very special community artwork.

Every thread tells part of the story. Families, friends, children and visitors of all ages have helped the wall hanging begin to take shape, with each contribution becoming part of a unique piece that will be sold in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance.

The lovely thing is... the project is still growing.

The community weave will remain on the loom until 23rd August (unless it is completed sooner), so there's still plenty of time to become part of it.

Everyone who takes part is invited to leave a message in a beautiful handmade commemorative book, lovingly created by artist Rowan Collinson. Covered in Helena's handwoven silk, the book will accompany the finished wall hanging to its new owner, creating a lasting record of the many people who helped bring it to life.

Whether you're visiting the gallery for the first time or returning to see Helena's residency, we'd love you to get involved.

Simply call into the gallery and have a go. Add a few rows to the community weave and become part of this very special project.

The Kindness Woven Into Every Thread

Yesterday was one of those days that reminds me why I love documenting artists and creative communities.

I spent the day at Mill Tye Gallery photographing Helena Powell's wonderful community weaving project, and it was such a joy to watch people of all ages come together around the loom.

Before we began, Helena shared the story behind the project. She wanted to create this collaborative wall hanging in honour of the house parents who cared for both her and her brother while they were at boarding school. Their kindness had a lasting impact on her life, and when their young baby suddenly became critically ill, an air ambulance helped save the child's life.

This community artwork is Helena's way of saying thank you.

She has generously dedicated two days of her artist residency to inviting visitors to experience hand weaving for themselves while raising funds for an air ambulance charity.

Throughout the day I watched children weaving alongside grandparents, parents encouraging their sons and daughters, friends learning together and complete strangers chatting as they took their turn at the loom. Every person added just a few rows, but together they are creating something truly unique.

One of my favourite parts of the project is the beautiful handmade commemorative book, lovingly stitched by artist Rowan Collinson. Everyone who takes part is invited to leave a message, creating a lasting record of all the people who have contributed to this special piece. The finished book, covered in Helena's own handwoven silk, will accompany the wall hanging to its new owner.

It was a beautiful reminder that creativity has an incredible way of bringing people together.
