What happens behind the scenes 📸

From makers working in their studios, to chefs in busy kitchens and producers working with the land. The finished product might be what we see, but so much skill, time and care has gone into it behind the scenes.

I’ve shared more about my experiences capturing these moments and the stories behind their work over on the blog here: https://www.emmaharrel.com/post/brand-storytelling-photography

I’ve been enjoying growing a few things to eat in the garden. 🌿 Lots of fresh herbs, some wild strawberries, beans and a collection of tomatoes.

A few of the tomatoes are ready, so I made a simple tomato salad with chopped capers, olive oil, a squeeze of lemon and plenty of fresh mint, with a pinch of sea salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper.

It was tasty on its own, but I had so many herbs to use that I ended up making a tabbouleh too, with lots of mint, parsley, chives and a little thyme. I scattered the tomato salad over the top and all those tomato juices, salty capers and citrus flavours worked so well with the bulgur wheat.

Here are a few snaps from the garden and what I made🍅

A recent shoot at Terra TERRA Restaurant & Tasting Room | Henfield at Tottington Manor for Restaurants Brighton, capturing their summer menu and Sunday roast alfresco.

Terra places a strong focus on local ingredients, seasonal produce and working with local suppliers, so I wanted to capture not just the finished dishes, but the sense of place and the story behind the food too.

From summer dishes enjoyed in the courtyard to their popular sharing Sunday roasts, it was lovely to photograph the food outside on a sunny day and capture a little of the atmosphere of eating at Terra during the warmer months.

We photographed the Sunday roast alongside a summery G&T made with Terragin, created in collaboration with Goldstone Rum Goldstone Rum and the summer menu was paired with Everflyht Everflyht Wylde Sparkling Rosé and Coombe Bottom Farm Dragon’s View Bacchus.

📸 How do you photograph your products?

Having a mix of lifestyle and studio photography can create a really versatile set of images. Lifestyle photography brings in context, atmosphere and a sense of how a product might be used, while cleaner images help show the details, shape and design.

Chia & Goji Berry Bircher Bowl 🍑

I created this simple make-ahead breakfast for Naturya using their chia seeds and goji berries, showing how their products can be used in an everyday recipe. It’s perfect for summer with juicy fresh peaches, although nectarines would be delicious too.

Recipe development can be a great way for food brands to show their products in use and create versatile content.

Fancy trying it? I’ve shared the recipe below, or you can read more about the shoot over on my blog here: https://www.emmaharrel.com/post/recipe-development-for-food-brands-chia-goji-berry-bircher-bowl

Chia & Goji Berry Bircher Bowl
Serves 2

Ingredients
100g oats
2 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp mixed seeds, such as pumpkin, sunflower or linseed
350ml milk
1 tbsp goji berries
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp vanilla extract
½ tin of peaches in juice, or roughly 200g fresh peaches/nectarines
2 tbsp yoghurt

Method
1. Stir the oats, seeds, maple syrup, vanilla, goji berries and milk together in a large bowl or container. Cover and leave in the fridge overnight.
2. In the morning, serve the Bircher with a dollop of yoghurt, tinned peaches and a few extra goji berries. Drizzle over a little of the peach juice and enjoy.

This editorial for 91 Editions explores seasonal food and sustainable entertaining through a plant-based summer feast, including a recipe for mini courgette galettes and ideas for low-waste hosting.

The shoot brings together simple, seasonal ingredients and independent makers, styled into a relaxed summer table designed to feel natural and inviting. The recycled plastic platters by Weez & Merl added a beautiful touch to the table. 💚

Everything was created to reflect a slower approach to entertaining, focusing on what’s seasonal, local, and easy to share.
