I absolutely love my job and couldn't envisage myself doing anything else. I took up photography late in life (in my 30's in fact) which given I grew up as a photographers model for my mum who was a wedding and portrait photographer, and my whole childhood is told through images which I treasure, it is an odd thing that I never thought to pick up a camera sooner. It was a flippant comment from a friend about how good I was at taking photos sparked the intrigue which FAST developed into a passion and a business. I always saw myself as an artist but I always thought it would be paintbrushes, however in greek, photography literally means 'Painting with Light' so I guess you could say my inner artist was finally set free.

I would love to say newborn is my absolute passion, it used to be until I started training in other photography fields like child and family fine art portraiture. So I now have to from the heart say my last photoshoot is generally my favourite - its a changing and ever-evolving thing, which is why I adore my job. I could not be anything, other than a photographer.

In October 2018 I gained my Licentiate Accreditation and Newborn Certificate from the Master Photographers Association which was an absolute honour and a full circle for me as the first trainer I worked with was indeed Ray Lowe the Chairman of the MPA. I can now proudly say I have won 26 awards and featured as the image of the day with the Guild of Photographers twice.

Every newborn pose you see on Instagram had trained hands just out of frame.

If your photographer can't explain exactly how they keep your baby safe during a session, that's all you need to know.

I've spent 12 years specialising in newborn photography and hold a Master Photographer certification in safe posing techniques. Safety isn't a bonus, it's the baseline.

Thirteen years of settling newborns.

That's how long I've been doing this. Thirteen years of learning the difference between a baby who needs five more minutes and one who needs a completely different approach.

The first hundred babies taught me patience. The next hundred taught me timing. Somewhere after that, it stopped being technique and became instinct.

I can read the tiny cues that parents can't always see yet. When to pause. When to rewrap. When to simply wait and let a little one find their own way to settle.

Hundreds of babies have been through my studio at Brickendonbury Estate in Hertford, and every single one has taught me something. That knowledge is what keeps your baby safe and comfortable in my hands. Not guesswork. Just a very long apprenticeship with very small teachers 🤍

If you're expecting and want your newborn session with someone who's spent over a decade perfecting this, get in touch. I'd love to look after you.

July 1st it’s all change here at HQ….. we move to the High Street, Watton At Stone. Into a beautiful little Grade 2 listed shop. I cannot wait!!! I am mostly excited for the flooring and the shop window and being part of the community in the village.

I am really looking forward to this Christmas there and also have stability and business growth again after many years of personal hardships. I look forward to welcoming my loyal regulars back and bring new little clients into my photography story!

June in Hertfordshire, the sun doesn't set until nearly late.

And for about 40 minutes before it does, the light turns everything soft gold. Your skin glows, the colours go warm, and every photo looks like it belongs in a frame on your wall.

If you're in your third trimester right now, this is genuinely the best outdoor maternity light you'll get all year. This window lasts from now through mid-June and then it shifts. The angle changes, the warmth drops, and you just can't recreate it.

I shoot outdoor maternity sessions specifically around this golden hour because the quality of light does half the work for me. No harsh shadows, no squinting, just beautiful directional warmth that wraps around your bump.

If you've been thinking about a maternity shoot, now is the time to book in. DM me or head to www.oliviachristina.co.uk 🤍

Your baby's first photo session happens inside a tiny 10-day window.

After 13 years and hundreds of newborns, I can tell you the sessions that go beautifully almost always come down to three simple things parents did before they walked through the door.

I've popped them all into this post so you can save it for when the time comes 🤍

Little behind the scenes!

Sometimes little big brothers and sisters are knocked for six as to the change in their home and relationship with their parents and this new stranger getting all this attention… they can be sky or timid or just not want to get involved. 9/10 I win them over because my entire focus becomes them… i’ll happily take extra time and down tools whilst they acclimatise to my studio and presence!

My favourite trick is coaxing them to take a picture of their parents with my camera and showing them that they out mum and dad inside my camera and wow what a magic trick…. Children feel energy and that 1% I don’t win, is probably a me problem and having an off day as I am human with lots of things going on in my life and they can feel it!!! But I do a very good job the other 90% and I am probably being hard on myself here as no one has ever not got the family or sibling portraits…

Anyway I am now on the countdown and packing up the Brickendonbury studio as next week it’s all go go go moving I to my shop!

First-time parents Google "newborn photographer near me" and hope for the best. Second-time parents ask three very specific questions.

I want to share them with you so you feel totally confident, whoever you end up booking with.

Question one: What safety training do you have?

Your baby will be days old. Possibly a week. They'll be gently moved, positioned and held for an extended session. You absolutely want to know that your photographer has completed specialist newborn safety and posing training. Not just "I've photographed lots of babies." Actual accredited training.

Question two: How do you keep baby comfortable throughout the session?

A good newborn photographer will talk you through temperature control in the studio, how they pace the session around feeds and nappy changes, and how they keep everything baby-led. Your little one sets the schedule, not the shot list.

Question three: What happens if baby won't settle?

Because sometimes they just won't. And that's completely fine. You want a photographer who has a plan for this, not one who panics or rushes. Ask how they handle unsettled babies and whether they offer a return session if needed.

These are the questions experienced parents naturally ask. Now you've got them too 🤍

If you'd like to know how I handle all three, drop me a message or have a look at www.oliviachristina.co.uk

You've slept three hours in two-hour chunks, there's milk on your only clean top, and your newborn session is tomorrow morning.

Deep breath, mama. I've got you.

Here's the bit nobody tells you. You don't need to prepare anything. Not really. The studio at Brickendonbury Estate is kept warm and quiet, the wraps and bonnets and baskets are already laid out, and I've got everything your little one could possibly need waiting for them. Dummies if you use them, a heater for the changing area, soft music, the lot.

What you actually need to bring is yourselves. That's it. Feed baby right before you leave the house, throw the spare muslins in the bag you've already half-packed, and come as you are. Tracksuit, no makeup, hair in a bun. Honestly, I mean it. You'll be cuddled up on the sofa with a cuppa while I do the fiddly bits.

This session isn't another thing on your list. It's two or three hours where someone else holds the plan, the temperature, the timing, and the tiny details, while you sit in a warm room and just watch your baby be small. That's the whole point of it 🤍

If you're booked in with me this week, breathe. If you're expecting and reading this thinking you'll never cope, DM me or visit www.oliviachristina.co.uk and let's get you penciled in while you've still got the headspace.
