“Quote marks that make the cut”

Bringing punctuation to life has been a fun typographical animation project, and this time I have been exploring the character and movement of quotation marks.

I selected a small mix of typefaces, weights and sizes that work well together, each with its own contrasting colour. The quotation marks are layered with varied transparency, rotation, zoom and fade to create a calm kaleidoscope effect.

A little mellow music sets the pace and helps everything flow.

This quotation mark animation is the next in the series, and I’m really pleased with how it has turned out. More to come.

Tiny typographical marks with big characters.

Bringing punctuation to life has been a fun typographical animation project I’ve been working on.

I chose a small mix of typefaces, weights and sizes that work well together, each with its own contrasting colour. Every punctuation mark is stacked with varied transparency, rotation, zoom and fade to create a calm kaleidoscope effect.

A touch of mellow music ties it all together.

This asterisk is my first animation, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. More to follow.

Red card, yellow card, business card!

We all know red and yellow cards still get used on the football pitch every weekend – but what about business cards? Are they still in play in today’s digital-first world?

I’ve been to a few networking events recently, and I was struck by just how many different ways people now share their contact details. Phones seem to have taken the lead – tap LinkedIn, scan a QR code, or wave a key fob, and your information is magically transferred. I’ve even seen wooden pendants engraved with QR codes. Clever stuff.

But here's the thing, I still carry a physical business card.

Why? Because not everywhere has a reliable phone signal. And not everyone wants to fumble with tech just to make a connection. Sometimes the old ways still work best.

A good business card does more than share your name; it leaves an impression. The typography, colours, logo, and layout – all the design choices say something about you. Then there’s the physical tactile quality of the card, is it smooth or textured, rectangle or square, minimal or bold, premium or budget? As a designer and photographer, I notice these things, and so do others.

When I receive a business card, I remember the person who gave it to me, the conversation, the setting, and the energy. That tactile, visual association is powerful in a way a digital file can’t replicate. I keep every card I get, and flicking through them often brings back a flood of memories and connections.

So no, I don’t think the business card is dead. I’ve just had a new batch printed, because for me, it's not just about making contact, it's about making an impression.

What about you?

Are you still handing out physical business cards, or have you gone fully digital?

I’d love to know, pop your thoughts in the comments below.

How my split personality makes me a better creative

Having a split personality isn’t all bad!

On one hand, I’m a graphic designer, and on the other, a photographer. I don’t see these two personalities as black and white, I see them as 256 shades of grey, beautifully blending from one to the other. Both personalities (or skills, if you prefer) complement each other seamlessly.

The Designer’s Perspective

As a designer, I’m always hunting for the perfect photograph to match the project I’m working on. The right image enhances the visual layout and strengthens the story the design is telling.

The Photographer’s Mindset

When I’m behind the camera, I’m constantly thinking about composition, layout, and proportion. Should the shot be portrait or landscape? Will it work as a LinkedIn banner, a Facebook ad, or an Instagram story? And if it’s for print, does it have enough space for a headline or body text?

The Best of Both Worlds

Having this split personality is a complementary skill set that I use daily. Each side informs the other, making me better at both.

So, what’s your split personality? What complementary skills do you juggle? Drop your answers in the comments, I’d love to hear them!

My thought for the week that got me thinking!

“The Process:

1. Decide what you want to achieve.

2. Try different ways of achieving it until you find one that works for you.

3. Do more of what works. Do less of what doesn’t.

4. Don’t stop doing it until it stops working.

5. Repeat.

It is both this simple and this hard."

A quote that recently resonated with me from James Clear, Atomic Habits:

"You are as old as the risks you take. In many ways, aging is not the process of growing old, but rather the slow death of becoming overly protective, scared, and worried about losing what you have. Youth is found in the energy of going for it, taking the risk, and trusting that you'll figure it out along the way."

Happy Friday.

This is the fifth and final instalment in my series of hero selfies taken at the Photography & Video Show, which took place over the weekend at London’s ExCeL.

This one features the incredible Gavin Hoey, a brilliant educator who has a knack for simplifying lighting and photography techniques, making them easy to understand and follow. I’ve been following him across all his social channels for several years now, from his Adorama tutorials to his website and YouTube channel. He’s an exceptional online trainer, offering practical tips and tricks that I, for one, have found incredibly useful and have put into practice.

Attending The Photography & Video Show for the first time, I was thoroughly impressed by the stellar lineup of speakers, the engaging talks, and the live demonstrations. The exhibition was packed with cutting-edge tech, gadgets, accessories, studio equipment, lighting, and cameras – there truly was something for everyone. The event was a hub of creativity, innovation, and endless learning opportunities. It was an inspiring experience, and I can confidently say it was worth every moment. I’ll definitely be returning next year!

The fourth instalment in my Hero Selfies series, captured at the Photography & Video Show held over the weekend at London Excel, features none other than the legendary Joel Grimes. Known as a visual storyteller and a master of light, Joel has long been a source of inspiration for me. I’ve followed his work for years and have even taken some of his excellent online training classes, which have been incredibly valuable to my growth as a photographer.

During the show, Joel presented to a packed audience, demonstrating how he creates stunning portraits using just a single 24” beauty dish light. It was fascinating to see how he achieves such dramatic and impactful results with such a simple setup. He then walked us through his editing process in Photoshop, showcasing his expertise not only as a photographer but also as an educator. His ability to break down complex techniques into digestible steps is truly remarkable.

Joel’s incredible body of work has taught me so much, and it’s clear why he’s held in such high regard in the photography community. On a lighter note, I couldn’t help but notice we share the same hairstyle – something that made this encounter even more memorable!

This is the third instalment in my series of hero selfies taken at the Photography & Video Show, which took place over the weekend at London Excel.

This one features the incredibly talented Lindsay Adler. I’ve followed Lindsay’s work for years, and for good reason – she’s not only an exceptional photographer but also a gifted trainer, teacher, and educator.
I had the pleasure of meeting Lindsay a few years ago at another photography convention in London. She was impressive back then, but this time, she truly outdid herself with a captivating retouching demo in front of a packed audience.

Today marks the final day of The Photography & Video Show, so if you have the chance, I highly recommend stopping by. It’s an inspiring event brimming with creativity, innovation, and countless learning opportunities – absolutely worth the visit!
