These five composition habits are quietly holding your photography back — and the frustrating part is they’re so common (especially when you’re learning).
The good news: none of them are talent issues. They’re awareness issues. And once you see them, you can fix them immediately.
1️⃣ Centering everything
If every subject lives in the middle, your images can start to feel flat.
Fix: shift your subject slightly off-centre and use the scene to lead the eye (paths, edges of light, lines in architecture).
2️⃣ No framing
When nothing “holds” the subject in place, the viewer’s eye wanders.
Fix: look for natural frames — doorways, windows, branches, curtains, people — anything that subtly draws attention inward.
3️⃣ Ignoring the background
The quickest way to make a strong photo feel messy.
Fix: before you press the shutter, do a 2-second scan: what’s behind their head? what’s cutting through the body? what’s distracting? Then move your feet.
4️⃣ Shooting everything from eye level
It’s safe… but it’s rarely interesting.
Fix: take three versions: one lower, one higher, one closer. You’ll instantly find the strongest perspective.
5️⃣ Filling the frame with “stuff”
When there’s no breathing room, the photo can feel tense.
Fix: use negative space on purpose. Let the subject sit with space around them — it adds calm, elegance, and impact.
