Irvine Golf Club
🏴 52
I lived in Irvine for a few years growing up, it’s where I first swung a golf club over the school field. It was an old Bronty pitching wedge a friend Harry gave me, I still have it.
I remember catching the train a few times and catching glimpses of the course, well I think it was Irvine there are so many good courses in such a small space, it could’ve been any one of the many located there.
This one brought back many fond memories learning to play golf over the school field, carving imaginary holes out of grass Islands scattered around the neighbourhood.
Irvine lived up to all expectations. It gets off with two nice opening holes and then the fun begins. The third hole looks straightforward but has a huge crater short of the green, you need your short game to really be on point. The fourth is similar, you only need an iron off the tee, your approach to raised green against the stone wall and railway leaves another tricky approach. Once again the fifth requires the well placed iron off the tee and the approach is to an even higher elevated green. Your approach play is really tested.
There was never a dull moment at Irvine, the design is such that you’re given a lot of options on how to play each hole. There’s good risk reward elements everywhere but be warned longer tee shots result in shorter approach shots into the greens and it’s not always the best route.
