Sports photography isn't just about the action. ⚽🏀📷

It's the moment before it happens.

⭐️The reaction afterwards.
⭐️The celebration.
⭐️The encouragement from teammates.
⭐️The people on the sidelines.

I enjoy bringing those moments together because they show more than what happened during a game, they help tell the story of the people involved.

Sometimes one photograph can tell the story of a game. ⚽📷

When I'm photographing sport, I'm not just looking for the biggest moments.

I'm looking for the moments that show what's happening on the pitch.

This photograph caught my attention because there are several things happening at once.

The referee blowing the whistle.

A player from each team in the frame.

The players reacting to what is happening around them.

It gives the photograph a sense of the game without needing to see a goal or a big celebration.

That's what I enjoy about photographing local sport. Looking at the action, but also thinking about the moments around it and how they can come together to tell the story of the match.

Every game has those moments. You just have to be ready to see them.

Fast movement, split-second decisions and plenty of energy. 📷🏀

I enjoy trying to anticipate the action when it is about to happen, rather than simply reacting to it in sports photography.

There's often only a moment to capture the shot: a challenge, a pass, a save, a celebration, so you have to be paying attention to everything happening around you.

It’s great photographing a range of local sports, from football and basketball to cricket and roller skating.

Every sport is different, but the challenge is the same: being ready for the moment.

On Sunday 20th September, I'll be heading out for a photography walk around Meltham, with wildlife photographer Ray joining us as a guest.

We'll spend the morning exploring, taking photographs and enjoying the local wildlife and surroundings. Ray will also be sharing some of the stories and experiences behind his wildlife photography along the way.

The walk is free to attend, with donations welcome for Meltham Wildlife Rescue. 💚 Every donation, whatever the amount, will help support the fantastic work they do locally.

Manchester Board Game Festival 2026 photo gallery. 📷

Here's a small collection of some of my favourite moments from the day.

There was so much to photograph, people completely absorbed in their games, reactions around the tables, conversations, laughter and all the little details that made the event what it was.

I really enjoyed photographing this one and looking for those moments happening throughout the room.

The people are what make an event. 📷

When I'm photographing an event, I love looking for moments in a large room.

There might be lots happening at once, so I'm always looking for ways to bring the people, the surroundings and the details together in one photograph.

This photograph from the Manchester Board Game Festival is a good example.

I liked the way the three players were completely focused on their games, while the event backdrop and branding were still visible in the background.

It's a simple moment, but it says quite a lot about the event.

New on the blog ⚽📷

I've been adding more of my recent sports and event photography projects to the blog.

This week, I'm sharing a look back at photographing the Scissett Legends football match and league match.

Football photography brings plenty of action, but there's also the challenge of anticipating what is about to happen and finding those moments that help tell the story of the game.

The photographs I remember most aren't always the biggest moments. 📸

Sometimes it's a reaction, a conversation, a laugh, or simply the way people are enjoying an experience together.

I recently photographed at the Manchester Board Game Festival, and there were plenty of these moments happening around the games themselves.

That's one of the things I enjoy most about event photography. It's not just about photographing the activity, it's about watching what is happening around it, anticipating those small moments and capturing the people who bring an event to life.

A moment can last only a few seconds, but a photograph can preserve it for years.

This is one of the moments that caught my eye from the festival.
