Your little one's first birthday doesn't have to mean a cake smash 🎂✨

Don't get me wrong — I LOVE a good cake smash! 😂 But they're not the only way to celebrate such a special milestone.

A first birthday session can be beautiful portraits, a styled setup, a favourite outfit, some family photos, a cake to admire (and enjoy with the family afterwards 😉) — or a combination of all of them.

There really is no right or wrong way to celebrate their first year. ❤️

It's about capturing who they are right now — their little expressions, their personality and all those tiny details that you'll want to remember long after they've grown.

Because they really do change so quickly. 🥹

So if a traditional cake smash isn't quite your thing, don't worry — your little one's first birthday can be celebrated your way. ✨

Well… this. 😂👇

Cake on the floor.
Cake on the outfit.
Cake absolutely EVERYWHERE. 🤣

But here’s the best part…

You don’t have to worry about any of it! ❤️

One of the things I love about cake smash sessions is letting little ones have the freedom to get as messy as they possibly can. So when the cake has been smashed, squished, thrown and thoroughly enjoyed, I take care of the mess. 🧹✨

That’s also why I have a selection of outfits available for your little one to wear during their session. They’re there to be enjoyed, covered in cake and get as messy as needed — and I’ll take care of cleaning everything afterwards.

So you can simply sit back, watch your little one have the BEST time and enjoy those precious memories being created. 🥰

There really isn't anything quite like watching a little one discover that they're actually allowed to make a complete mess with their birthday cake!

From the excited little smiles to the icing-covered fingers, the surprised faces and, of course, the inevitable mess… these are the moments that make cake smash sessions so much fun.

And while the cake might not survive the session, the memories certainly will. 💙📸

If you’ve been thinking about booking a photoshoot with me, don’t leave it until later… because some exciting changes are coming! 👀✨

From 12th September, I’ll be introducing new packages and new ways to book your sessions at Dee Dee Photography. 💕

That means the packages currently available won’t be available for new bookings after 11th September.

So if there’s a session you’ve been thinking about booking — whether it’s:

Turn On Your Grid 📱

That little grid on your phone camera might not look like much, but it can make a big difference to your photos!

It can help you:

✨ Keep your photos straight and level
✨ Position your subject more intentionally
✨ Create a more balanced composition

And once you get used to it, you'll probably wonder how you ever took photos without it!

Have a look in your camera settings and see if you can turn your grid on. 📸💙

Same setup. Same studio. Same little model. 👀

But one photo was taken on my phone… and the other with my camera.

The left image is literally what the setup looked like when I took a quick phone photo.

The right is the finished photograph after I've used my camera, lighting, posing, composition and editing to create the final image.

And this is exactly why professional photography isn't simply about having a nice backdrop and pressing a button. 📸

There's a lot that goes into making the final image look the way it does — from how I position the subject and shape the light, to choosing the right angle and then carefully editing the final photograph.

Sometimes the magic isn't in the setup… it's in what the photographer does with it. ✨

And yes… taking the quick phone photo is definitely part of my job too. 😂

And honestly? You don't need to.

You don't have to arrive at your photoshoot knowing where to put your hands, how to stand, what to do with your face or how to make yourself look natural in front of a camera.

That's what I'm there for. 💙

I'll guide you through your poses, show you where to stand, where to look and what to do — and I'll make little adjustments along the way to make sure everything looks just right.

My job isn't just to take the photograph. It's to make you feel comfortable enough to enjoy the experience and create images you'll love.

Who said the birthday photos have to stop at ONE? 🎂💗

We all love a good first birthday cake smash… but can we talk about 2nd birthdays for a minute?

At two, they're full of personality. They have their own little expressions, their own cheeky smiles, their own ideas about absolutely everything 😂 — and they're becoming so much more THEM.

That's exactly why I love photographing this age.

No cake smash needed. No big reason needed. Just a little snapshot of who they are right now, before they grow and change again.

Because birthdays aren't just milestones to tick off… they're memories you'll want to hold onto. 💕

And honestly, I think every birthday deserves to be documented. 🎈
