It was good to get back in the saddle with this shoot with Rosie! I’m excited to get stuck into the edit, but for now… this little sneak peek will have to do.

We also gave the people of the Rivergate a bit of entertainment while they enjoyed their Costa coffee. The brutalist architecture made for an excellent, slightly stark backdrop against Rosie’s bright styling - the contrast worked perfectly.

Not often you’ll find a goth clown hiding out underneath there… but not never.

Ready for a bit of a life update?

I spent the summer making things, although not necessarily photographs. I found myself wanting to spend more time doing things that took a while. I felt like I was slipping into a bit of a super-short-form cycle, 3 second videos, watching everything at 2x speed, constantly consuming something and I was struggling to stay present.

I had a few plans for the summer that never quite worked out (learning Capture One being one of them), so instead I decided to just do some things for myself, purely for fun. Last year it was gouache painting; this year it was cross stitch, a hobby I picked up when I was about ten. Anyone who's done cross stitch will know that it is slooooww. And I think that's exactly what I needed. I think you can tell by the stuff I was making, that I was channelling some joy!

It also gave me the chance to properly sink my teeth into things like Walkie Talkie by Paulie B. Hour-plus-long videos of photographers walking around and talking about their work and processes. They're incredibly insightful, interesting and motivating. There's something about watching someone take their time to talk through their work that feels particularly refreshing when you're so used to everything being condensed into thirty seconds.

I've officially started uni! The commute to Edinburgh on a Tuesday and Wednesday was giving me a bit of anxiety in the run-up to my start date, but now that I've done it for a week, I've realised it's actually just one big straight line. There's maybe four roundabouts and a couple of junctions, and I can handle that. I've also been absolutely gobbling up audiobooks, and I'm currently listening to Adults by Emma Jane Unsworth. It's so good that I'm actually saving it purely for the commute!

University is pretty much exactly what I hoped it would be. The library is also absolutely filled to the brim with photobooks, so far I've been spending my early mornings and lunch breaks in there, happily browsing through them. It feels like a pretty good place to be starting this next chapter and I'm excited to get my first studio session underway on Tuesday!

This will be going towards the long, long, long term goal of starting my own studio space

These days a visit to Glasgow is only complete by visiting Simon Murphy's Berlin-transplanted Photoautomat, located in Street Level Photoworks. Louis and I have a small collection of these strips from Fotoautomatica in Florence, and one in Toronto, that only took 'toonies' and now 2 from close to home.

You should definitely go visit Glasgow's golden booth!

When did we all become ok with mediocrity?

In the good weather I have been taking more strolls down the town. The short walk from Eglinton Street, along the Number 11 bus route, through to Bridgegate isn't far. But in that tiny stretch alone, I'd guess there are more than 15 huge, empty, overpriced commercial units. All decaying. A discussion for another day.

I think we're suffering from what I'd call trickle-down apathy. When the people responsible for looking after our town seem to stop, then everyone else's expectations slowly start to fall. We stop questioning it. We stop expecting better. Eventually, neglect stops looking shocking and starts looking normal.

On that same short walk, there are sections of road that are literally caving in. I know plenty of people, including myself, who've damaged their cars on potholes big enough to lose a wheel in.

And that's only the visible part of the problem. It's the tip of a very large iceberg that we're all staring at, yet somehow seem content to drift towards.

How has any of this become acceptable?

Don't get me wrong. There are good people in this town. Lots of them. You're one of them. I also understand that feeling of thinking, "What can I actually do?" or "Whose job is it to fix this?" But isn't that exactly why we have a council? To maintain and to look after? To spend the money we all contribute in a way that leaves the place better than they found it?

Instead, it feels like too many of the people making the decisions are detached from the reality we're walking through every day. While senior officials are paid significant salaries, residents are left stepping around crumbling pavements, empty shopfronts and streets that don't only look neglected, they are fully neglected. They're not taking walks through the town, because if they were they'd be faced with their failings.

So where are the councillors who were elected to represent us? Where are the voices challenging these standards?

Somewhere along the line, we've started accepting the absolute bare minimum as normality. Every month, I'm sure you pay a pretty hefty direct debit labelled CTAX. You'll likely pay Road Tax. For what? Surely the very least we should expect is clean streets?

Is how towns die? Not through one catastrophic event, but through thousands of people quietly accepting that mediocrity is just the way things are?

Sincerely, fed up.

I thought it would be kinda fun to revisit our trip to Toronto and show you the memento book I made from ephemera from the trip.

Toronto was sort of like Diet New York and I'd go back tomorrow if I could. We had such an amazing time, from start to finish. We saw the CN tower, we went to Niagra Falls, we were an arms distance away from Cillian Murphy, Willem Dafoe, Ethan Hawk and so many other film stars at the TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival). I won a prize for my stowed away knowledge on Asian cinema and I collected so much cute stationary from the makeshift stationary shop tour I took Louis on. We saw System of a Down and Deftones as well as Comeback Kid in a teeny theatre. We each got given used pucks from a Toronto Blue Jays game and we got a tour of the Toronto Raptors dressing room. There was just non-stop memory making and 11/10, I would go again.

Huge congratulations to Robyn on being crowned Miss Great Britain Ayrshire 2026! I've really enjoyed following some of the events along the way. It's been so wholesome and inspiring to see the confidence, encouragement, and genuine support shown throughout the competition, especially initiatives like the body-positivity photoshoot, which produced some incredible images by Sylvan Buckley

You can read more about the event here: https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/ayrshire/ayrshire-miss-great-britain-winners-37362258.amp

And, just for fun, here are a couple of photos I took of the winner Robyn during a fun college project Ayrshire College Ayr Racecourse

This shoot was originally set up as something entirely different, but the weather had other plans. Unfortunately, most of the planned elements, a jockey, a horse, and even a bus, were affected by the conditions and had to cancel. But, the make-up team and models had already made their way to the venue in pretty sketchy conditions and were all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Instead of calling it, we adapted and worked with what we had. The result was a set of spontaneous Ladies’ Day fashion images. So with no pressure & no expectations, we just had a bit of fun with it.

With great thanks to Autumn & the team at Ayr Racecourse for allowing us the space to have a play even when the weather wasn't playing ball.
