//Guitars, are well, - "perfectly acceptable " - lol //

If you place a Gibson Les Paul guitar in my hands and pass me a plectrum - I may just about be able to strum something resembling a tune - the cat may wince though !

If you gave that same guitar to a proper musical they would make it sing and soar to amazing heights - whether thats an Ed Sheeran, an Eric "The God" Clapton, a Jimmy "two fret" Page, or even a Noel "alright our kid" Gallagher.

These legends have spent decades perfecting their craft, making their mistakes early on before the cat stopped being forgiving :).

Give a camera to most people and put it on Automatic mode, and they will take a "perfectly acceptable" photo as these days digital cameras are super computers that make decisions in an instant.

Perfectly acceptable is NOT how you want your wedding photos to look like is it ? Thats why, many surveys quote around 45% of couples being unhappy with their wedding photos.

In todays image, I absolutely love the way how Simon, twirls Victoria round and the shadow that her dress makes on the lawn and of course, the sun star.

Having images that couples fall in love with, and then want to invest in massive prints and in their hallway, or living room is why I shoot manual, and always gives a me a buzz.

Unfortunately, if you put a camera onto automatic, then super computers will not really understand art. light, context and emotion well enough to ever beat a human.

These are the building blocks of imagery and bringing all this together so you as a Bride, or a Groom, actually makes you feel something and be taken back to that moment in an instant.

That, imho, is one of the keys to mastering ones craft- namely seeing a image that wasn't there, then executing it with a simple suggestion.

Let me know if you agree, or not ?

//Shaken not stirred - the subtle art of not giving a f**k//

Sometimes, an image needs stripping away to B&W where the raw emotion shines through - just light and darkness - a great metaphor for the times in which we live.

Sometimes, you need that dash of colour to evaluate that moment for maximum impact.

These 10 images showcase when to use colour and when to not.

Its worth scrolling to the end, and in between you may just spot an ex Premiership football player who played for England, he was very under rated unlike some of the prima dinners who at times appear to trip over a rouge bit of grass and roll around like a spoilt 4 year old - apologies to that particular age group !

Enjoy these cropped images designed to highlight what I intended without any internal noise - just like a good weekend should be - chilled and relaxed - enjoy your weekend folks ! ☯

When people ask what makes a great wedding photographer…

I usually say look beyond the wedding photos.

Look at the eye behind the camera :-
The curiosity.
The creativity.
The courage to see things differently.

This week I photographed one of the most iconic sculptures in Britain — the mighty Angel of the North — in high-key black & white.

Not the obvious view.

Not the postcard view.

But my view.

Because that’s how I photograph weddings too.
✨ Real moments
✨ Beautiful light
✨ Images that feel like art, not just documentation

Swipe through and you’ll see:
• A glimpse of how I see the world
• Some unforgettable wedding moments
• A little of my own life...
(yes, that’s me and my other half) and dressed up as Mick Hucknall from Simply Red, or was that Geri from The Spice Girls - in my dry robe of course !

Love and understand fusion weddings as I've travelled to 5 continents and scores of countries, so would naturally like to hear more about your wedding vision and what I can do for you to make it beyond memorable!

• And a subtle nod to my Vintage Photobooth Cumbria — which quietly steals the show at a lot of weddings.

Because great weddings are about personality, joy, and connection.

And if you’re planning a wedding anywhere in this glorious country of ours, being dismantled by the Elite and those Puppet politicians - then I’d love to hear your story.

From Inverness, to Newquay and from Portree to Braintree - let's talk now !

📩 Send a message or enquire today — 2026 & 2027 dates are disappearing quickly.

A year ago I received a message that began with a simple question:

“Do you photograph marriage proposals… and do you know the sawmill near Wasdale Head?”

Of course I did.

Before becoming a full-time Lake District wedding photographer, I came from a mountaineering background.

I still climb Scafell Pike every year and know the hidden corners of Lakeland like the back of my hand.

Over the following week Kishan and I exchanged more than 100 messages. Planning a surprise proposal can make anyone nervous — especially when the moment matters this much.

On the day, I drove over the dramatic Hardknott Pass and made my way to the wild beauty of Wastwater near Wasdale Head.

A luxury Tentipi had been quietly set up beside the lake. Fairy lights. Rose petals. Comfortable chairs. A hamper filled with beautifully locally sourced produce.

When Kishan and Dimple arrived, I approached them casually and explained I was photographing visitors exploring this quieter corner of the Lake District.

“Would you mind posing for a quick photograph?”

As they turned toward the mountains, Kishan dropped to one knee.

The mountains held their breath.

And the answer was yes.

If you’re planning a surprise proposal in the Lake District, I’d love to help you create something unforgettable — and quietly capture the moment it happens

// The good people of The North East -Do NOT scroll - just yet //

Do you know what the first picture is - do you even care ?

Well I've taken something incredibly well known and photographed it in a way you just wouldn't know.

And thats through a deep understanding of light mastered over decades.

So if you having a fusion wedding, then that presents a whole range of problems for many in ensuring that skin tones remain natural and consistant throughout - fortunately I'm experienced as these images highlight - so the highlights remain and everything balances ☯

Imagine what I can do with your 🫵 wedding pictures ? 🔥

// GrounDOG Day //

Back in the day - weddings were almost universally attended by people.

Fortunately the rich tapestry of life now means your 4 legged children can attend weddings - some even steal the show.

They say never work with children and animals, but always up for any challenge and loving Mr Dog looking dapper in his best tweed jacket contrasting with the pink flowers, and crimson dresses of The Bridesmaids 😎

// Understanding light, understanding emotion //

Following on from yesterdays post, this set of images, from Frankie & Pete's wedding highlight (extremely apposite and relevant) the difference between someone who snaps images and those who create art.

Underpinning expertise in any industry is a mastery of what's important.

In photography the two things that make up an image, is how one uses the ambient light and how emotion plays it's part in creating an impression.

In both instances, the commonality is how you shape the light, and you create the emotion. When you only have say 15 mins to nail the newlyweds portrait session, you better know what to do and have a range of strategies to tease the emotion out of that session - often under time pressure to deliver.

That is the million pound question and why it has taken me thousands of hours practice and a whole toolBOX of tricks to tease out natural emotion - in a drop of a hat.

Just like turning on a tap - or unlocking a lock - only someone skilled and experienced who understands both is the difference between making or breaking your wedding photos.

In addition, each lens renders differently and understanding how your glass operates under different lightning conditions is what separates the best from the rest, or the wheat from the chaff.

We are not all equal, and in life you generally get what you pay for, so investing wisely is what the smart people do.

I love shooting into the sun and creating sun stars, sun flare and streaks of light with colour with circular and semi - circular patterns - they have an almost magical, mystical quality about them 🔥☯

What do you think ?

Would love to hear from you if you love this style of imagery ☯🫵

// It's not about perfection - its about the feeling //

When I look back of these ceremonial photos of Frankie & Pete at Jedburgh Cathedral I'm actually loving the feelings they evoke.

Yes, I could look at the Vicars hand in the photo, or the foliage obscuring the best man's whistling on the opening image - but sometimes us photographers are not allowed to more, and when the aforementioned Vicar laid out "the rules" I was respectful to the occasion.

These 10 images are representative of the type of images I try and capture, and during this phase of a wedding this style of photography is purely documentary, ie capturing without interruption.

Tomorrow, I'll show you some images taken afterwards, where imho, this is where I earn my money and which I excel in - eg creative spontaneity ☯🔥🙏

Finally, whilst these images are not technically perfect, in any way shape or form, the question is - would you be happy if these were your wedding photos ?

As almost half of couples in surveys regularly cite, not investing properly in your wedding photographer, was there biggest regret as almost 50% of couples are dissatisfied with their ohotos.

Frankie and Pete absolutely loved their images, which was good enough for me.

// Do you see it ? //

Matthew composing himself reflecting on his forthcoming marriage to Diane, with a fine single malt in hand and checking the weather minutes before the guests gather.

Then out of nowhere the light changed and, well do you see it ?

In his reflection Bambi appears from seemingly, out of nowhere !

This was intentional as a slight shift in The Grooms position meant the stone work on the building behind created this image -with a twist.

This image was the taken in exactly the same place as the previous post and two years apart - but both are completely different for different reasons.

At every wedding I always suggest authentic Bridal and Groom portraits that perfectly capture all the elements that make up your wedding day.

Limited dates, left for 2026, so DM for details if you seek art as opposed to someone snapping away - spaying and praying is what I call it, verses, intentional images with hidden depth and feeling.

//Hidden depths//

Sometimes at a wedding all in takes is a few seconds to create images with hidden depth.

This image of Abi the Bride whose looking straight at the camera whilst her reflection is keeping an eye on her Groom.

By stripping away the colours - this B&W image imho represents an image with hidden depth - wdyt ?
