Is your quadrature encoder the wrong resolution?

Do you need a 2nd output with a different resolution?

Is it too aggressive, and you want to slow the acceleration/deceleration but keep the ultimate following ratio?

We may just have the answer in this small device.

It can divide quad counts by a floating point number, multiply by a floating point number (maximum is currently 7 or so), and has variable smoothing. Max output rate is currently approx 1.7MHz but we're working to improve all these figures.

The standard DynaStick control has a new addition. Replacing the normal drive control box & BLDC motor/encoder with a complete acutator (with the control unit on top) for more power. The new system can be configured with a 30:1 to 120:1 harmonic gearbox, and is wonderfully responsive (not to mention accurate!).

Adjustable accel/decel/speed, user limits and position memory controls are present, but with a 100:1 gearbox as shown, torque is up to 40NM at 180 deg/sec (on 28VDC input). Input can be up to 80VDC depending on spec.

All control is sent down an RS485 link - Everything needed (except a PSU) is shown below. Stick and actuator...(and a cable until the RF link is added in). That's it.

For DynaStick specs, see:

A quick and dirty video showing the wheels desk operation. Sorry about the bent wheel... It was an old Mega3 wheel that had been used for testing! Also it's balance is of, but hopefully the point comes across!

The next exciting project is starting life as the control system and drives for underwater heads... The drives will be neat little units (see pic which is of the motor, gearbox, and control PCB, so the complete unit for each axis) providing approx 40+Nm torque and over 180 degrees per second speed (near zero backlash) and positional accuracy of around 0.03 degrees (final exact numbers tbc). Coupled with our new wheels desk, it's absolutely precise, and compact, running over an RS-485 link (so only 2 signal wires).

It has 1 button limit set/clear, variable speed and damping. Maybe record and replay (but not many people want this) and the option of an rf link (obviously not for underwater stuff).

Prototype being put together as we speak. The drive system does work beautifully so far.

If anyone has any interest in this, or suggestions, we're all ears.

Photos to follow as soon as the final assembly is assembled.

DMI are very pleased to have successfully completed the "League of Legends" Singapore leg with 6 Dynastick camera sliders with no hitches (other than a dodgy D-Tap connector).

2 systems were standard TED Tango sliders, and the other 4 were mini rugs mounted into the desks themselves.

I hear the contestants liked the new cameras so much, they were interacting with them bringing a whole new perspective to the show.

Thankyou to Adam (the DoP) for all his glowing feedback.

Just seen a wonderful couple of videos posted by the lovely fellows at Clear Angle Studios, highlighting some of the capabilities of the systems they've created - and we have helped design/manufacture...

Finally got an OLED display working for the DynaStick. Looks lovely, now that all the display artefacts have been sorted. They update so fast, you have to test your display code more carefully than with an LCD.

I'll post the new option imminently.

In the interests of anyone wanting to use OLED displays (using Cypress PSoC), I shall be posting the code changes, and things to watch out for, on our website in the next few days.

Pay it forward!

4 turntable systems, complete with various pre programmed sequences have been tested and finished. Apparently accurate to 3 pixels (using Sony alpha 7 iii cameras). 90kg weight limit, using brushless servo motors and harmonic gearboxes, and or own drive control system from our DynaStick system (see www.mega3.tv for more details).

We have moved...

After approx 29 years at Shepperton Studios (starting with Aerial Camera Systems as a wescam tech, 2 Olympic games, then teaming up with Nick Phillips when we designed the AMPTAS Technical Oscar winning Libra stabilised head, then as DMI and the design of the Mega III, DynaStick, more kit on the 2012 Olympics and FIFA world cup, and lots of fancy stuff for Clear Angle Studios...

But we're not far away!

We are now based 5 miles from our old home, in Hersham, (the opposite side of Walton on Thames) directly next to the train station.

The next batch of Dynasticks are half gone already. New to this version is laser engraving, Lemo/Fischer grade connectors, and a few metalwork tweaks.

Used as the drive for the ProSup TED.

Automatically set soft end stops, user end stops, and options such as high speed and time lapse.

Drives brushed or brushless motors up to 40V 25A (standard unit is rated for 15A).

The first batch of 10 DynaSticks systems are all snapped up. But not to worry - We're making more.

Features include:
- Real-time track-end finding with no pre-calibration necessary (with compatible track eg Tango)
- Intelligent user end stops (with adjustable ramping)
- 4 position memories
- Adjustable smoothing
- Loop replay of 2 to 4 positions, with
- variable delay
- number of loops
- on-the-fly accel/deceleration adjustments

Currently making tiny changes for the next run - improved ergonomics, lower power consumption (battery-back-up) and higher encoder supply current
