"Far from home"

--

A juvenile Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus) photographed during its unexpected stay in County Louth. Breeding across eastern Europe and wintering in southern Africa, this long-distance migrant is a scarce visitor to Ireland and a real treat to encounter.

--

Background Information

Species: Red-footed Falcon (Falco vespertinus)

Age: Juvenile

Breeding Range: Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, eastern Europe and western Asia.

Wintering Range: Southern Africa.

Migration: One of Europe's most impressive long-distance migrant falcons.

Diet: Mainly insects, especially dragonflies, beetles and grasshoppers, though it will also take small mammals and birds.

Irish Status: Rare migrant and vagrant, making any prolonged stay a noteworthy event.

I am absolutely over the moon to share that I have received my Licentiateship from the Irish Photographic Federation (LIPF). This is the first of three distinction levels in the IPF whereby I had to submit a panel of 10 photos for assessment in Mullingar last weekend.

I have to mention for the cuckoo encounter, River Birch Hides for the kingfisher and swallow and the amazing CCB 1XV Rugby squad for some amazing action shots. deserves a huge thank you for the many road trips that led to the Silent Valley, Donaghadee and Castlerock landscapes. It also goes without saying that the learning, support and advice I've had from
has been invaluable.

This last year has been absolutely incredible and I can't wait to get out and about creating more memories 😍
