I haven't posted in aaaages - so I'm returning with a bang! Here are a selection of my favourite shots from a white-tailed eagle boat trip on the Isle of Mull back in July. The main focus of the trip was to make a video for my wee YouTube channel but I enjoyed myself so much that I went on a second trip to get more photos! If you haven't seen the video, I'll link it in the comments below. Please consider subscribing to the channel (it's free) if you like what you see. Cheers 🦅

Late last year I started a YouTube channel with the aim of spreading awareness about ecological issues in Scotland, in particular ecological restoration ie ’rewilding.’ If this kind of thing is up your street then please click the link below and hit the subscribe button on channel. I’ve uploaded 3 videos so far and there are more to come! 🌲 🌳 🐺 https://youtube.com/

I was at Mar Lodge NNR last weekend and walked up Glen Quoich for the first time. It was great to see all the young trees spreading across the landscape. This is a result of intensive deer management in the absence of natural predators, which has reduced heavy grazing and allowed the trees to flourish. One day this ancient pinewood remnant will be a large forest sprawling across the landscape. Hopefully one day it will connect with the forests of Rothiemurchus and Glen Feshie across the other side of the Cairngorms. Sadly, you and I will likely be long gone before that happens - but it’s nice to dream!

Yesterday saw one of my finest achievements so far in wildlife photography. I have spent the past couple of weekends organising a site for photographing common buzzard. This involved getting permission from the landowner, building a perch for the birds and baiting the site with roadkill pheasant. On Sunday afternoon I set up my hide and the following day I was in the hide for a 0530 start. It only took 3hrs until the first buzzard appeared. I took loads of photos but I think this is my favourite one. I’m absolutely delighted (and surprised!) at how quickly I managed to successfully get the shots I was looking for.

Delighted to have finally seen my first ever bearded tit today! To get a photo of one is a bonus. I spent 3 hours waiting for a sighting. I could hear their metallic pinging calls tantalisingly close to me but hidden within the reeds. It was a great moment when this striking male bird first appeared into view with his little black moustache. Now that I have my eye in I’ll need to return another time to try and get clearer shots of them!

Had a great time photographing these Mandarin ducks today. These birds are non-native and were introduced here from China after captive birds escaped into the wild. They became established in Britain during the 1930s and have been here ever since. Not considered an invasive species, these birds appear to coexist quite happily alongside out native ducks. The females, as bonnie as they are, are rather dull compared to the male which have magnificent plumage. Really pleased to get these shots.

I spent Sunday photographing the mighty munro Slioch which towers over Loch Maree and ancient Caledonian pinewoods. The bogs and heaths are looking wonderful just now as they take on the colours of autumn. Bog myrtle, bog asphodel and purple moor grass are some of the plants here turning the landscape orange and gold.
