(A bit of fun for anyone with a phone camera to try....)
We promised last month that we’d look at some fun things to do
during the school holidays with the children [or get them to try
for themselves] using a phone camera. We’ve included a
couple examples of shots you can make without using anything
more than the camera – no special apps or Photoshop or
editing skills required.
1. ‘In the Palm of Your Hand’ - This is a very simple shot to
create and just uses perspective changes. You need two
people as models. One person stands close to whoever is
taking the shot and holds out their hand, palm up. The
other needs to stand about 20-30m away – it’s worth
experimenting with different distances – and stands facing
the photographer in line with the first person. all the
photographer needs to do is move the camera around so
that the person in the distance appears to be standing on
the palm of the nearer one.
You can try different poses for both people to see what
combination you like – having a parent standing on the
child’s hand as shown in photo 1 is a fun one.
2. ‘Don’t Lose Your Head!’ - This one needs a bit more
planning. You’ll need two people again. This time you
need to find somewhere that one person can sit down with
only the top half of their body showing – a low wall or a
fallen log will work well - or you can use a park bench, as
long as the photographer is close enough so that only the
very top of the back of the bench is in the shot. The first person sits down with their back to the photographer and bends forward so that they’re only visible from the shoulders down. The other person needs to lie down next to them, facing the camera, with only their
head showing above the wall or bench. The person facing away then just needs to put their hand on the top of the other person’s head.

photography, Kinross Camera Club is always keen to hear
from potential new members. You don’t need to be a ‘good
photographer’ or have an expensive [or indeed any] camera to be welcome; the club is open to anyone and everyone who has in an interest in photography or image making. From September to April each year we hold weekly meetings on a Thursday evening in Kinross for club competitions [including one only for phone photography], invited speakers or practical evenings to teach members new skills.
