“And one day, you realise it was never about the big things. You realise it’s actually about the little moments that feel like magic. It’s about the simplest of seconds that make you smile. It’s about the genuine experiences that fill your heart with joy.

It’s about the conversations that make you believe in kindness and compassion. It’s about the hugs you want to hold for that little bit longer. It’s about surrounding yourself with people that feel like sunshine. It’s about the moments of peace and stillness that prove how beautiful the world can be.

It was never about the big things.”

Capturing special moments since 2011 🖤

TIPS FOR COUPLES! Every day this week I’ll be posting an expert tip for upcoming couples.

I’ve been to a LOT of weddings and with that experience you get to learn the little things that will both ensure a couple have the greatest day and of course help make for some killer photos!

#6 Golden hour!

I feel like to some degree it’s an obvious thing that most couples are aware of but as an experienced photographer I cannot stress strongly enough the degree to which the half hour before the sun goes is the most amazing time for getting killer couple shots. Knowing how to manipulate that light creates opportunities for me to capture something special. I’d always recommend checking when that time will be and giving consideration to if, within your schedule, you’ll be able to head out and take advantage if you’re fortunate enough to have a sunny evening.

#5 Think about light!

There are parts of the day where you will have some degree of influence over the setting and the aspect. This probably mostly applies to morning preparations and the ceremony. If great photos are important to you then ‘good light’ will really help with this. Natural light always trumps artificial light so we’re talking windows – the more and the bigger the better!

#4 Confetti!

You can’t have too much - simple as that! It’ll be a memorable part of the day but it’s also a banker for great photos. And the more confetti, the better they’ll look!

#3 A bit of flair!

A couple of little pre-planned but nice and easy ‘flourishes’ can make for killer photos without being forced or contrived. This could be the groom lifting the bride during first dance. It might be as simple as holding your bouquet aloft during confetti, or stopping for a quick kiss at the top of the aisle. You get the idea... little ideas to buzz the vibe and effortlessly create awesome photo ops in the process.

#2 Think about the flow!

Your planner or venue will guide you on this but it’s definitely worth being mindful of. Nothing too rushed and no lulls is the sweet spot to aim for. For me the key times are:

i) The drinks reception - make sure you allow time to get whatever photos you want AND to mingle and enjoy this time yourselves. Some couples worry about this part of the day perhaps being too long for their guests. Honestly, don’t! If they have a drink in their hand and a couple of canapes to take the edge off, they’re good, I assure you!

ii) The transition from the end of the meal to the start of the party. You want to avoid a lull for sure... but do you need a little time yourselves here? Do you have an outfit change? Does this coincide with sunset when you could getting those killer couple shots? You might even consider putting some sort of music or other entertainment on here to entertain guests through the transition.

#1 You guys bring the energy!

It’s your day, you are the centre of things and the vibe you bring will set the energy levels for the day more than you’d ever realise! A wedding is a wonderful celebration by default but bring your A game and you will set the tone, I promise!

HOME.

I travel all over to photograph weddings but home to me is Yorkshire, Leeds specifically. It’s a region that I love so much about on a personal level. In a professional capacity it has some truly stunning wedding venues (like Duncombe Park pictured, up near Helmsley) and some outstanding planners too! All in all, a very good place to be based!

What’s the most overlooked thing by couples when searching for a wedding photographer? Comment with your thoughts…

I’m going to go with EXPERIENCE. As someone who’s been shooting weddings for a good few years I can
reliably tell you first-hand how important it is. I certainly recognise my own evolution as a wedding
photographer through the years. There’s technical stuff like lens choice, framing, focal length and
reading light. But also anticipating when things are going to happen, knowing how to interact with
couples, understanding how best to capture the important moments... You need miles on the clock
to truly develop these skills. It’s very easy these days for photographers to present what on face
value may appear an appealing portfolio by showing their best shots, often with workshop images
mixed in. My advice to any couple would simply be: be thorough, scratch below the surface a little and establish experience levels!
