June 1st.....Steve has now spent time in hospital in every month of the year but it also means he's only 12 days left!!!

Sorry I've not updated for a while. Steve is doing really well and is coming home on the 12th. He has used his camera as part of his ot work and his editing software. He is still unable to walk but we are still hopeful that this isn't a permanent thing but he's looking forward to hopefully getting back to his 'traits' project as soon as he can so watch this space. Thank you everyone for your continued support it means a lot to us all ❤️

Steve moved to walkergate park yesterday a specialist neuro rehab near Newcastle. He continues to make good progress and is still cracking jokes.

It’s been a while since I posted an update but things are plodding along nicely, a lot of the progress is what we’d call background work. Steve’s had a weakness in his effected side hip so physio have been concentrating on getting that corrected before they try and get him to walk. His arm is slowly becoming better too, they work on a point scale with 66 being ‘normal’, Steve went to bishop at 26 and is now at 39. Spoke with the physio last week and he said Steve is working so hard in the sessions and he’s never seen anyone sweat so much! He’s also now on the waiting list for another specialist unit in Newcastle which is great news but also means he won’t be home this year.

After almost 14 weeks Steve is finally infection free 😁

He's doing amazing and working super hard at his rehab.

Quick update for everyone. Steve was finally moved to the local rehabilitation unit last night. He's been doing amazing with his physio at Durham but he no longer needs acute care 😁

16/09/2022

This was taken last week, I wasn't sure about posting it but I want everyone to see how hard Steve is trying and how much he's achieving. I've had his permission to post it. This was the third time he'd done this. He has his amazing physio team with him, one making sure his left arm is ok and isn't too painful, one checking his left left is engaging as it should and the other keeping an eye on his balance.

Found out today his antibiotics finish on the 7th Oct, all being well he'll be able to move on to rehabilitation 🤞

Steve continues to improve, he's had another practice standing session and between each one the physios are concentrating on improving his leg and bum muscles to make standing easier for him. He's been measured for his own wheelchair and his infection markers have dropped significantly.

For those asking after william and I, we are managing ok. William has been amazingly strong and seems to be coping OK with the return to school. I'm super proud of him. We try and do something nice on a weekend, weekend just gone we had a day in Edinburgh and if im not up to leaving the house we watch movies and have a takeaway. I've found a fantastic charity called different strokes which is for people under 65 who have had a stroke and their fb offers great support and information.

Steve stood for the first time today (4 times), didn't get to see it but when I got there today the consultant, nurse and physio were waiting to tell me, we all cried we must have looked mental 😂

So they finally decided Steve was medically stable enough to go to rehab but now rehab (bishop) won’t accept him because he has a picc line for his antibiotics and they don’t have nurses who can deal with it. It’s so frustrating but he needs his antibiotics. Durham are going to try and give him as much physio as they can but it won’t be as intense.

Got to speak to the dr today. His abscess has now shrunk to a level whereby they’d just class it as a inflammation so that’s great and his infection markers are significantly lower. His stroke was a pca infarct this is a significant stroke that affects his memory, sight and movement. He’s been quite lucky in that he can see but has lost left peripheral vision in both eyes and his memory mainly seems in tact. She’s going to try and speak to bishop to see if they can utilise two nurses that are attached to bishop to oversee his picc line so he can go there but will not send him unless she’s 100% sure the line can be dealt with correctly otherwise he could be in a whole heap of trouble. They’re also trying to get his shoulder pain under control so physio can push him more. The acute pain management team are linked to the surgical team however not the stroke unit so the injection he needs isn’t easy to get but the dr is hoping to pull some strings (makes no sense to me if someone needs pain management it shouldn’t matter the department they come under!)

He did so well today with practicing his movement with me, and was able to grip my hand where I couldn’t just slip it out, he also managed to hold and lift slightly a tangerine. He’s really trying, I’m in awe of him. Next step is to get him stood up but they need 3 members of staff for that so it’s logistically difficult.

I’m finding it all a little frustrating but I honestly believe the stroke ward are doing everything in their power to get him what he needs.

Hey everyone

We never got to find out where the new infection was (despite scans of chest, abdomen, pelvis, spine, heart x 2 and brain x 2) but the antibiotics he was being treated with seem to have done their job 🤞 his abscess is shrinking too. They fitted him with a picc line instead of the Hickman. He’s no longer on a soft food diet and can eat whatever he wants although apparently needs to learn to take smaller mouthfuls 😂 He’s sitting up in a special chair more and they’re measuring him for his own wheelchair soon. His physio is going well and he realised Saturday that he can move his arm from the elbow down from his side in bed on to his belly which is great. He has some feeling in his thigh and feeling that seems to come and go in his arm. He’s no peripheral vision in his left eye but otherwise his eye sights seems to be unaffected. He started to be able to watch movies and tv shows so his concentration is improving. He gets really tired but that’s apparently common with a stroke. From various conversations and his sick notes I’ve learnt he’s had a massive pca infarct stroke, I’ve googled and can’t find much information about it. I’ve a lot of questions about his care and stroke so am going to make an appointment to see his consultant hopefully this week. We’re both overwhelmed with all the messages, I read as many as I can to him.

Sorry for not updating for a while, I was worried people would get sick of seeing the posts but judging by the amount of concerned messages I’ve had I guess not. So Steve has gotten over COVID but is still spiking a temperature, they’ve ruled out his abdomen, chest and brain for infection and he’s awaiting spine ct and a echo gram.

His Hickman line has come out and it turns out that there are no more so they aren’t sure what the next option is for giving his long term antibiotics, for now he’s back to a cannula and the dr is going to get in contact with the consultant in charge of the Hickmans and see what he suggests.

Stroke wise he’s doing really well with his physio, and they’re hoping to get him in for a double session this weekend. He enjoys it too which good. He can move his arm and leg, with a lot of concentration, effort and help (supporting the limbs weight) but he still has no feeling, this can come back at any time apparently. I’m so proud of the effort he’s putting in and his quiet determination. His speech is almost normal, he’s humour and intelligence are there which is amazing. He’s also trying to use messenger and WhatsApp so you may receive random messages but please don’t be offended if you don’t, it’s a little overwhelming for him at the moment but I’m just pleased he’s trying.

William and I are coping, probably him better than me but we’re finding our path, my cooking is rubbish but we’re not starving. Work is helping and I’m slowly trying to do more ‘normal’ things. I can’t thank everyone enough for your messages, comments and offers of help. It’s overwhelming and heartwarming to know how much Steve means to people.

Today was the most positive visit yet. Got to talk to his physio (who he’s named mother fsking Spider-Man), she showed us the range of movement he actually has in his left arm but because, at the moment he still can’t feel it he’s unable to do it without help. He can move his elbow, grip, flex and shrug his shoulders. Even she seemed surprised at the progress he’s made in the last few days. She’s given us a few exercises we can do with him whilst we’re there to help. Leg wise he has some movement in his toes and foot but is suffering a lot of hip pain when being moved which they think is the abscess pushing against the nerves in his back, hopefully that’ll improve as the abscess shrinks.

He’s coping with COVID really well and just has a mild cough it seems. He’s still struggling with his focus/concentration so can’t read or watch anything yet but he has done a few small sketches.
