Cosmic Tadpoles swimming near the Flaming Star... or are they?

These two nebulae appear close together in our night sky, but it's a cosmic illusion.

The Flaming Star Nebula (IC 405) is 1,500 light years away.
The Tadpoles Nebula (IC 410) is 12,400 light years away.

That's over 10,000 light years between them - they just happen to align from our perspective here on Earth!

This image took 11 hours of data across a 2-panel mosaic using narrowband filters.

THE CHAINED PRINCESS AMONG THE STARS

In ancient Greece, Andromeda was chained to the rocks - punishment for her mother's vanity.

Perseus slew Medusa, rescued the princess, and the gods placed them among the stars.

Today we see a galaxy with a TRILLION stars racing toward us.

- 2.5 million light years away
- May merge with the Milky Way in ~4.5 billion years
- Farthest object visible to the naked eye

Claudius Ptolemy recorded M7 in 130 AD - almost 2000 years ago!

THE CLUSTERS:
M7 (Ptolemy's Cluster): 980 light years away
M6 (Butterfly Cluster): 1,600 light years away
Both have ~80 stars and are visible to the naked eye

Two galaxies locked in a gravitational battle 12 MILLION light years away

M82 is being ripped apart by M81 - and stars are forming 10x FASTER than in our Milky Way

This cosmic war started 100 million years ago

- 7.5 hours of data
- LRGB + Ha filters

The Cosmic Elephant Trunk - a stellar nursery 2,400 light years away

This pillar of gas and dust is 20 LIGHT YEARS long - and baby stars less than 100,000 years old are forming inside

- Located in the constellation Cepheus
- Part of the massive IC 1396 complex (100+ light years across)
- 9.5 hours of narrowband data

Nebulae Inside Andromeda Galaxy | Star Formation 2.5 Million Light Years Away

The Andromeda Galaxy (M31) captured in RGB + Hydrogen-Alpha, revealing star-forming nebulae 2.5 million light years away.

• Distance: 2.5 million light years
• Contains ~1 trillion stars
• NGC 206: the most conspicuous star cloud in Andromeda
• Red/pink glow = hydrogen emission nebulae (stellar nurseries)
• Young blue star clusters visible in spiral arms
• Integration: 8 hours 31 minutes
