At Perfect Paws Vets today for their official opening! Can’t say how much I appreciate the care and kindness that Amanda, Andra and co gave our Fluffy cat over the past 4 years. They kept her going and were amazing in their care of our lovely 21yr old cat!

So next Saturday few friends and I are doing the Yorkshire 3 peaks (Pen-y-gent, Whernside and Ingleborough) to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.
My relationship with prostate cancer is similar to many- my father got it and was successfully treated for it about 20 years ago. But 4 years ago it came back. Luckily, the treatments had improved and he is now in remission.
Unfortunately, this is not the case with many thousand others who lost that battle.
The money raised for this is going to help research to find better treatments, earlier diagnosis and hopefully make this cancer more easily treatable.
My Dad got onto it early, and got tested, then treated for it. If you have any symptoms then go and talk/get checked out with your GP.
If you wish to help by donating any amount, please use the link below and leave a message- the weather on Saturday looks a bit soggy, so the messages will help push us along!

Friday Feature - Heterochromia!

On Tuesday I had a chance meeting with Rogan the husky, who, as well as being a big bundle of energy, has eyes that are different colours!
So, as an ex-biology teacher I thought what a great thing to discuss in one of my Friday bloggy/social posts!🙂

What is it?
The condition is called Heterochromia and it is not an uncommon in certain breeds. Aussie cattle dogs, Huskies, Border collies and Dalmatians are just some of the more common breeds that this condition can affect.
How does it happen?
As an ex-biology teacher I would love to dive deep into the genotypic reasons (like the study that showed there was "...a duplication directly upstream of the Homeobox gene ALX4, which plays a part in the development of mammalian eye..."1) . I love this stuff- it is pure science and being able to apply something like this to my new career, is brilliant!😁

Essentially, it means that heterochromia is a genetic condition, so most pups have their eyes different colours from birth (the eye colour gene determines the eye colour from conception when the s***m and egg haploid DNA fuse after fertilisation takes place- sorry!! Got caught up in teacher-mode!👨‍🏫) and this has no effect on their eyesight! It is a myth that dogs with different eye colours will be blind later on in life, but scientific research has debunked that!

If some pawrents have experienced their pups eyes changing over time, go and get your beloved pup checked out by a veterinarian, just to be on the safe side as this could be due to cataracts, glaucoma or other eye conditions2.

Well, from a purely selfish standpoint, I think that they look amazing and should be celebrated for their uniqueness and I love talking their pictures as they are amazing!!

Do you have a pup with this wonderful condition? Leave a comment below if you do!!👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇

(Oh, it is chromosome 18 which carries the tandem mutation near the ALX4 gene in Siberian Huskies and in some coloured Austrailian Shepherds, if you were really keen to know 🙂 )

After seeing the fierce gaze of the Harris hawk, we needed some soft lovely brown eyes of lovely Freya, a one year old Rotty who was soft as butter ☺️ Such a lovely pup and one more of my !

Her size and the orange eyebrows remind me of the black-and-tan huntaway sheep dogs of my Dad's, who used to heard the flocks of Merino sheep on the hills by barking, getting them to move in the right direction!

If you think the eyebrows are cute, leave a message below👇👇👇👇

Something a bit different today! Apart from catching up with Sarah and her lovely children in Golden Acre Park, Leeds, we met this wonderful example of a raptor!
This is a Harris hawk that was being used to chase away pesky magpies harrassing people. They were extremely calm and was chilling out on their handlers arm. The fierce focus of the gaze was something to behold and I pity the magpie or rabbit that is caught up in it!!

It's not quite but the next post will show you Freya who was lovely!

Have you seen a raptor (dinosaur or feathered kind!) if so what kind and where? Leave a comment 👇👇👇👇👇 below
