A relative newcomer in a land of grizzled veterans, Dumbarnie Golf Links has found its footing in Scotland’s county of Fife—just 12 miles south of St. Andrews—after debuting in mid-2020. Though it lacks in experience (age, in this case), it excels in THE experience, with a welcoming vibe and a course that feels like it’s been there more than a century rather than just six years.
The property is nestled into a comfortable seaside location just down the road from another renowned modern links at Kingsbarns, and close to familiar Scottish layouts like Elie and Lundin Links. English player-turned-architect Clive Clark—a member of the 1973 GB&I Ryder Cup team who also finished in a tie for third at the 1967 Open Championship—was called upon to build a premier links course on a sandy and undisturbed 345-acre section of the 5,000-acre Balcarres Estate near the village of Upper Largo and the Firth of Forth. There, a nondescript landscape was molded into a sea of approximately 600 sand dunes and a routing with 18 thought-provoking puzzles to be played.
