The wonderful landscape of Chile Patagonia. Mountains towering over the fields full of these haunting trees. The trees are incredible to shoot but the reason for them being dead is very sad. Fires caused by irresponsible tourists on two occasions caused thousands of acres of damage.

Taken on my treasured trip to Chile Patagonia in their Autumn which was out April. Nikon 850 with the marvellous but hefty 80-400 lens OPEN to VIEW The dead trees are a gift to shoot but there is a very sad story behind them. See below

The irresponsible behavior of some tourists caused a couple of huge fires that destroyed a great portion of native forests. Unfortunately, such forests are known for their slow growth and the burnt Nothofagus trees will remain here for about a century before a healthy forest can grow again. These landscapes of devastation can still be seen today around the Grey refuge and Pehoe Lake areas.

In 2005, a Czech tourist accidently overturned a gas stove. The result: about 15,000 hectares of nature burnt (EcoCamp Patagonia was directly threatened by the fire which was fortunately stopped a few hundred meters away from the hotel). In 2011, about 17,000 hectares of the park were affected by a fire caused by a tourist from Israel who burnt toilet paper in the woods at the shore of Grey Lake. Thousands of animals died during these tragic events and all tourists were evacuated from the park.
