Photography’s history is full of remarkable firsts; but many of the women behind those breakthroughs have too often been overlooked.

From some of the earliest women to ever pick up a camera, to those who carried one into war zones and documented the world with courage and conviction, female photographers have helped shape the medium in ways that still influence it today.

There are far more pioneers than we could ever fit into one article. So, in celebration of International Women's Day, here are some of the women who helped change photography forever.

📸 Peter Marlow: The English Cathedral | Opens This Thursday!

Lichfield Cathedral is excited to host this free touring exhibition of breathtaking dawn photographs by Magnum photographer Peter Marlow. Captured in natural light with no artificial lighting, the images showcase the serene beauty, intricate architecture, and spiritual stillness of all 42 Anglican cathedrals in England.

Visitors can also take part in an interactive photography activity — your image could win a fine art print from the Peter Marlow Foundation!

🐚 Tiny teamwork on the shoreline – see it in person at Your Cathedral

Theo Bosboom (the Netherlands) shows how mussels bind together to avoid being washed away from the shoreline. Theo likes to take images of species that aren’t usually considered beautiful or important, to highlight their unappreciated significance. He took this image from above with a probe lens – a long, thin, macro wide-angle lens.

Mussels are important because they help create conditions for other creatures like crustaceans, worms and small fish to thrive. They improve water quality by feeding on plankton, bacteria and toxins, stopping them from building up to dangerous levels. This process is called filter-feeding.

📍 Discover this image and more at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at Lichfield Cathedral this summer.
📅 The exhibition is free to view during the Cathedral’s opening hours, entry to the Cathedral is by donation, and no tickets are required. Check lichfield-cathedral.org before visiting as opening hours are subject to change.
