Confessions of a photographer…

I still get nervous before shoots, errry single time.

My new mirrorless camera, sat in the bag, while I quietly reach for my old faithful instead.

When something goes wrong (it does), I voice note my friend Geoff, who has heard more panicked “WHY WON’T THIS WORK” messages than any other kind from me.

Here’s the bit that actually matters though: I don’t chase perfect. Perfect is boring. I chase feeling, real laughter, messy hands, the paint-splattered sink I’ll photograph for 45 minutes because the light hitting it is doing something magic.

That’s genuinely what I’m looking for when I photograph you too. Not flawless, but real.

A little escape to the Lincolnshire countryside this week.

I took a visit Studio Yutori, a brand new reformer & mat Pilates & yoga studio just outside Doddington, tucked inside a converted farm building with the most incredible views over the fields.

I wasn’t sure what to expect. But from the moment I walked in I was just… calm. Big windows, natural light, the sound of nothing much at all. Elry, who runs the studio, is warm, knowledgeable and brilliant at adapting the session to what your body actually needs that day.

It felt less like a workout and more like a little reset.

If you’re local to Lincolnshire and looking for something that feels genuinely special, this is it.

Yes… that’s me.

Back to school, back to routine, back to business. 
Side note: Anyone else wish they still made this style My Little Pony lunchboxes? Because I would absolutely be carrying one to shoots. 
I love a good routine. Summer is wonderful and chaotic and full, but there is something about September that just feels like a fresh page, New pencil case energy.  
So much to share with you over the coming weeks, shoots, blogs, behind the scenes, I’ve been quietly beavering away for some time.  
And if you haven’t seen, I’m starting a ‘not-a-newsletter’ newsletter. Monthly-ish and genuinely the most back-to-school thing I could possibly do.   Link in bio to sign up. Class dismissed.

It’s not a newsletter. 
It’s more like getting a letter from a mate who happens to think a lot about photography & making things. 
Occasional. Honest. Sometimes about a shoot, sometimes about slow living or why I spent forty minutes photographing a sink. Always worth opening. 
No value bombs. No five tips to transform your brand. No apology for not emailing more often.

Just something quieter and more considered than the usual noise, landing in your inbox when I’ve actually got something worth saying.

We’re off!

First ever big family holiday, and the kids’ first time on a plane… So if you need me, I genuinely might be locating a lost stuffed animal at 30,000 feet.

I’m someone who finds it very hard to switch off, but this one’s non-negotiable. A full week of no laptop, no editing, no “just quickly checking emails.”

Any enquiries will be answered when I’m back, but for now, I’m choosing sandy feet over spreadsheets.

“The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.”

I think about this a lot when I’m photographing makers.

Every stitch, every handmade piece, every small business built from scratch, it’s someone saying “I was here, and this mattered.”

That’s the bit I’m actually trying to capture when I photograph you at work. Not just a nice product shot but the proof that you made something real, with your own two hands, that’s going to outlast the moment.

There’s a hidden wooden door in the Bailgate. Through it, up the tightest spiral staircase you’ve ever climbed, at the top is a studio with leaded arched windows, Lincoln Cathedral on one side, the castle square on the other. 
And in that studio? Four people quietly making some of the most beautiful watches.

Pinchbeck Watches (Pinchbeck Watches) are a small, family connected team handcrafting timepieces to order each one designed from scratch, each one made by hand, each one a tiny work of art. I had the absolute privilege of spending a day capturing their story for their brand new website (the brilliance of Number 75 Design | Brand & Website Design 🙌). 
The watch components up close are something else. Like tiny works of art. I could have stayed all day photographing cogs and I have zero regrets about that.

There are certain shoots that remind you why you fell in love with photography in the first place. Carly’s was one of them.

A paint spattered floor, canvases everywhere. Fairy lights and quotes on the walls.

And Carly in her element, laughing in her studio doorway in paint covered dungarees.

This is what personal branding photography is really about, not just portraits, but the whole world someone has built around their work.

If you’re not a fan of needles… this might be your cue to scroll past now.

But if you are curious about what acupuncture actually looks like (and more importantly, who’s behind it)… keep reading.

This shoot with Nicole from Sol Acupuncture was all about trust. Because when something feels a little unfamiliar, seeing it properly, honestly, gently makes all the difference.

Nicole wanted her clients (and future clients) to feel at ease before they’d even walked through the door. To see the person behind the treatments, not just the needles. The calm. The care. The why.

And honestly? Watching her step in front of the camera, even whilst saying she wasn’t comfortable doing it, and absolutely owning it… that’s the magic right there.

“Building trust and connection with my clients is at the heart of what I do…” and you can feel that in every image.

This is what personal branding photos are really about. Not stiff headshots. Not pretending to be something you’re not. Just you, your work, and the way people experience it.

(And yes… I promise it’s far less scary than it looks.)

Kerry is a counsellor, coach & just a genuinely lovely human.

For her personal branding shoot she didn’t want to hide behind the usual “therapist” look. She knows people aren’t just choosing qualifications, they’re choosing the person. So the aim was simple: show who she actually is.

Books are a big part of her world, so we shot part one at (obvious choice). It suits her: calm, cosy, warm and grounding rather than clinical.

Then we did a second shoot in her therapy space so clients can see exactly where they’ll be coming. That bit matters too - familiarity makes things feel safer before you even walk through the door.

Also worth mentioning: she has the most soothing voice imaginable. Honestly, half the therapy probably starts the moment she says hello.
