Some views are worth getting out of bed for. 🌅

High above Belfast, as the first light of day began to creep across the city, I stood for a moment and just took it all in.

From up here, the noise, traffic and chaos of Belfast seem a world away. The city stretches out beneath Cave Hill, slowly waking as the sun rises behind the horizon.

Sometimes, as a photographer, you spend so much time looking through the lens that you forget to simply stop and look.

On this morning, I did both..

WHERE THE MOUNTAINS MEET THE SEA ⛰️

At the edge of County Down, the land runs out — and the Irish Sea begins.

This is Newcastle Harbour 🛟

Behind it, the Mourne Mountains rise from the landscape, a vast wall of granite that has watched over this coastline for generations.

From the ground, the scale is impressive.

But from above, the relationship between mountain, town and sea becomes clear.

It is a landscape that has changed.... The mountains haven't.

And from this height, you can see why this corner of County Down has captivated people for generations.

🎥 ALTERNATIVE ULSTER — A DIFFERENT BELFAST

Turn the volume up!

In October 1978, Stiff Little Fingers released Alternative Ulster — a raw, angry soundtrack to a city and a generation growing up in the middle of the Troubles.

Belfast was a city divided.

Barricades. Checkpoints. Army patrols. Bombs. Burned-out buildings. Streets emptied early. Communities separated by invisible and very real lines.

For many people growing up here, this wasn't history. This was everyday life.

Now look at Belfast from above.

Almost 48 years later, the same city is filled with lights, nightlife, hotels, restaurants, offices, tourists and people going about their everyday lives. The waterfront has been transformed. The city centre has been regenerated. Places once associated with fear and division now attract people from all over the world.

But Belfast hasn't forgotten.

The scars are still there. The stories are still there. And the generation that lived through those years still remembers a very different city.

Perhaps that's what makes Alternative Ulster such a powerful soundtrack for these images.

Because this isn't just a drone flight over Belfast.

It's a glimpse of how far the city has travelled.

From a city known around the world for conflict...

to a city trying to define itself by what comes next.

1978 → 2026

Same streets.
Same people.
Different Belfast.

And maybe that's something worth remembering.

📍 DRUMCREE & THE GARVAGHY ROAD — A VIEW FROM ABOVE 👀

This 360° image was taken over the junction of Garvaghy Road and Drumcree Road in Portadown — an area that has been at the centre of one of Northern Ireland’s most contentious parade disputes for almost 30 years.

The latest chapter came this week when the High Court quashed the Parades Commission’s most recent determination preventing the Orange Order from returning along the Garvaghy Road. The Commission accepted that there had been a procedural error in how the decision was reached.

It doesn't automatically mean that the traditional Drumcree parade can now proceed down the Garvaghy Road — a fresh application and decision will still be required. But it has certainly reopened a debate that many thought was closed forever.

And here's the question I'd like to put to people:

After almost 30 years, should there be a way for a traditional Church parade to return along its historic route?

Northern Ireland has changed enormously since the worst days of the Drumcree dispute. Surely, in 2026, we should be capable of finding a way for people to exercise their traditions and cultural identity while also respecting the residents who live along the route?

That doesn't mean ignoring the concerns of local residents. And it doesn't mean demanding that anyone welcomes a parade they don't support.

But perhaps after nearly three decades, the answer shouldn't always be another barrier. Violence would not suit the local people on either side, and only bring destruction and misery.

Is there actually hope here that this dispute can be resolved amicably and tolerance demonstrated by both communities in Portadown, that can then be used as a positive example for the whole country moving forward?

There is no doubt come next July there will be dark elements in the background seeking to exploit the situation for their own gains, or to use it as a smoke screen to hide their own shady dealings.

As the saying goes... "If both sides are fighting each other, they are not looking at us"
Hopefully in 2026 the local people are wise enough not to be used a pawns.....
