Cloud Chamber series, Geneva, 2016

Up-close with the cosmic-like movements of the cloud chamber at CERN.

I vaguely recall these trails being a little tricky to photograph given the scale, movement and random appearance of the them, which are formed by charged particles interacting with vapour (which is as simple, and possibly inaccurate, as I can describe it!).

I've always liked how these miniature photos can feel as large as the universe.

Wandering the Immeasurable, Geneva, 2016

Looking up at a section of 'Wandering the Immeasurable', a sculpture by Gayle Hermick at CERN that depicts various breakthroughs in physics through the ages (photo of the full sculpture in the comments).

From CERN's website:

"Twisting 11 metres into the air, the sculpture, which is shaped like a giant ribbon, pays homage to great discoveries in physics through the ages. Some 37 metres of steel are laser cut on the outside surface with 396 discoveries in their language of origin. Each shows a scientist's name and the year and nature of his or her breakthrough in the field of physics, astrophysics or mathematics."

Emerging from the Shadows, Birmingham, 2016

A favourite photo of my own of an animal, taken inside a tunnel at the National SEA LIFE Centre Birmingham.

I remember patiently waiting and taking multiple photos as the sharks swam back and forth, hoping to get an image like this where one of them would pass through the illuminated bubbles.

This has always been a black & white photo (swipe to see) to me, but I thought I'd give a colour version a go. I really had to pull back on the strength of the blue, but I like how it's turned out to work in a slightly different way.

A Curved Corner, Birmingham, 2016

This photo of a corner section of the Bullring Shopping Centre was taken horizontally, but by rotating it I found I preferred it in this portrait orientation.

Like this combined with the circular plates that make up the surface detail, it made me think of it as a section of some sort of metallic reptile tongue, which never crossed my mind in its original orientation.

Rooftop Reflections (sideways), Birmingham, 2016

Following on from yesterday's post, here's another of Birmingham New Street station's rooftop.

I never gave this photo much consideration after I first took it. Compared to yesterday's photo, this was taken horizontally and at a closer position to the building, so the perspective and reflections are a bit different and perhaps don't work quite as well on first glance.

Coming back to it now, I decided to have a little play with it - the main game changer was in rotating it 90 degrees to the right which allowed me to see it in a different way. The reflections gain more context in this orientation and I think the curves flow better.

Rooftop Reflections, Birmingham, 2016

This photo of Birmingham New Street station's shiny and wavy metallic rooftop is one of my favourite architectural photos that I've taken.

It has always been a bold black & white photo to me since the first time I processed it (and it might still be), but coming back to it now I decided to try a colour version of it.

The colour version, which I think works quite nicely in a different way, certainly required a more subtle approach compared to B&W, which is something I've learnt over time. I doubt I even gave colour much of a try for this photo 10 years ago!

Rusty Lookin' Chain, Isle of Wight, 2016

The Cowes Floating Bridge is a small chain ferry boat that carries passengers and vehicles across the River Medina.

Naturally, my eyes were drawn to a nearby detail - running down the side of a concrete loading ramp that led down to the river were these rusty-looking chains laid out in neat and tightly packed rows, the same type that the ferry ran along.

Toss a Coin for The Lifeboat, Isle of Wight, 2016

On the approach to The Needles was this front-garden covered in a range of children's toys (which remind me of my own childhood), garden gnomes and quirky/humorous not-quite-inspirational phrases such as:

"Never put off until tomorrow what you can avoid altogether"
..and...

"Hard work never hurt anyone...but why risk it?"

Aesthetically, this isn't one of my favourite photos, but there's an unusual charm to it and plenty of details that I can spend a while looking at.

On the Edge, Isle of Wight, 2016

On the following day of a school-friend's wedding on the Isle of Wight, a group of us took a trip out to The Needles, a tourist sight named after the large chalky rock stacks that lead out into the ocean.

Looking across from the viewpoint I was standing at, I could see another person also taking photos from a similar viewpoint on the nearby cliff (at least that's how it looked from a distance!).

The person is not obvious until you see them, but once you do, they give a sense of scale to the scene that perhaps isn't obvious straight away.
