Mario Andretti — British Grand Prix, Brands Hatch, 16 July 1978.

Mario Andretti of John Player Team Lotus, photographed in the pit lane at Brands Hatch on the day of the 1978 British Grand Prix.

Andretti was driving the revolutionary Lotus 79 Ford, one of the defining Formula One cars of the ground-effect era. He qualified on pole position and led the early stages of the race before retiring with engine trouble.

I took this photograph with an Olympus OM1 camera while attending the Grand Prix with the Photoflex film crew. I was working as the sound recordist as we filmed material connected with the use of fibreglass in the Lotus racing cars.

Mario Andretti — Lotus 79 Ford
Brands Hatch, British Grand Prix
Sunday, 16 July 1978

I took this photograph of Mario Andretti in the No. 5 John Player Team Lotus 79 in the Brands Hatch pit lane at approximately 2:40pm, shortly before the cars left the pits to take their places on the starting grid.

I was at Brands Hatch that day (my 19th Birthday) working as sound recordist with cameraman Tony Caveen for Liverpool production company Photoflex. We were shooting a 16mm industrial film for Pilkington, St Helens, about fibreglass and its applications, including its use in Lotus cars.

Andretti qualified second alongside his Team Lotus teammate Ronnie Peterson, who was on pole.

Looking back almost 50 years later, this photograph has become a fascinating record of a remarkable period in Formula One and Team Lotus history.

Is it throwback Thursday or should that be on a Tuesday? Anyhow this was taken on a Saturday back in January 1981 when I used to freeze sitting on the touchline at Liverpool (and also Everton matches) and it was always a 3pm kickoff Liverpool v Southampton. The legendary Kenny Dalglish against Malcolm Waldron. No Auto focus, no motor drives. Olympus OM1 camera with a vivitar 200mm lens. Kodak Tri-X 400. My first published picture in ‘Match Weekly‘ magazine. It was a 1-1 draw btw! Prints available.

My first digital camera back from 2002 it cost £1899 body only. Nearly a quarter century ago!
As you can see it’s been gathering dust tucked away on the top of a shelf.
It took me a couple of years at least to transition to fully digital. It was a wrench to leave the film Hasselblad and Walker 5x4 cameras behind.
