In our eyes it might seem that lichen have a static life, but in reality these organisms are deep time ecosystem engineers.
Life upon land began with lichen. By breaking down rocks they provided the core foundations for other life to grow.
Providing minerals that would be otherwise inaccessible inside solid stone, they began a food chain that continues to extend to unfathomable ends.
When we think of ecological restoration, our minds jump to human intervention. Things that we can do that will have an effect within our own lifetime. Often these actions can be unnecessary, although with best intentions in mind, and only often a short term resolution to ecosystems that have been millions of years in the making.
It might be that, despite our efforts, our time on this planet will cease in the future, but lichen will no doubt continue to live on and rebuild as long as it has the means to do so.
