DON’T LOOK BACK IN ANGER - CHANGES IN CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHY
The new Prime Minister, speaking outside the doors of 10 Downing Street shortly after his formal meeting with the King, said that with the UK having seven prime in the last 10 years it was an appropriate a moment for reflection.

Reflecting every now and then on life is never a bad thing. Now that I’m comfortably into my third decade providing corporate photography services, I’ve been thinking about just how much my profession has changed since I first started Piranha Photography.

So, what are main difference after three decades in corporate photography? While it was and remains a people business, the main ones are a shift toward faster turnarounds, the reduced amount of client phone contact, more casual work attire and a focus on social media-ready yet authentic imagery. Despite these changes, the demand for high-quality, creative and engaging professional portraits remains as strong as ever.

WHY DOES THE CAMERA UNSETTLE SOME PEOPLE AND NOT OTHERS?
It’s an interesting question and one I’ve much pondered over the years. It’s not about conventional beauty. People with irregular features can look strikingly good on camera and they are more than happy to be photographed.

But for a small number of people, even the traditionally very good looking, being professionally photographed is a torment to them, and despite our professional skills, preparation and people handling sometimes we can’t persuade them that they will actually look great in our photographs. This is to do with negative self-image, and sadly it’s becoming more common in the social media age.

Portrait photography can be a pleasant, fun experience and achieve headshots that even the most camera shy can be happy to put on LinkedIn or see on their firm’s website and marketing materials.

HEADSHOTS FOR PRIVATE EQUITY FIRMS
The key to taking consistent professional headshot images hinges on lighting, backdrops, camera lens settings, tripod positioning and people handling. These are the key ingredients when managing headshot photography sessions that may extend over several days, even for a single client. For every subject photographed, the technical set ups have to remain the same to ensure consistent results in keeping with the desired brand presentation.

In the results showcased here, we have been photographing this particular private equity client for 15 years, returning regularly to photograph batches of new joiners as the firm expands, and also when it has refreshed or redesigned its website and other promotional collateral. Our images are used throughout its communication materials including its intranet, brochures, pitch decks and social media. The corporate headshots are also a valuable resource for staff members to use on their individual on LinkedIn and social media accounts.

Piranha Photography’s headshot services are used by many other London private equity firms of all sizes, from boutique to global players.

PHOTOGRAPHY OF RURAL AMERICA
📷 The imposing London Gagosian Gallery in Mayfair’s Grosvenor Hill hosts 21 of Richard Avedon's iconic photographs taken in rural America. Direct, confrontational images, shot in natural light against a large white sheet backdrop on a large format, Deardorff 8x10 film camera, and therefore in incredible detail.

My favourite Avedon photograph (shown here) is the uranium miner 1979 - the size, cropping and incredible resolution make for a very strong image. I wonder if the miner is still alive today?
