As the sun made its' daily plunge toward the western hills, I made my way through this enchanted valley of rolling grasses, blooming flowers, and tiny streams. The clouds overhead began to gather quickly, and we would descend into rain before nightfall.

Dramatic skies bring an end to a short winter day, at the topographical nadir of the United States, at over 280 feet below sea level. Here water sparsely collects and quickly evaporates, leaving behind these unusual patterns in the salt-covered soil.

"Goblin Valley Glow"

An off-the beaten path state park, Golbin Valley is a small area of unusual mushroom-like sandstone formations. I arrived on a relatively flat looking afternoon, with clouds to the west that appeared would block any evening light. However, as many others left, I continued to explore the area, and a tiny bit of colorful light escaped those western clouds, illuminating the overhead clouds for only a minute or so.

Everyone should experience the euphoria of watching a sunset from this majestic vista at least once. Often lost amid more famous neighbors in Southern Utah, Cedar Breaks offers incredible sandstone formations similar to those of Bryce Canyon, with greater vertical relief, and amazing western exposure.
