Title: Leaving the Road Behind: Purpose Beyond the Pedals

Dear friends, family and all,

I have some news – my solo biking adventure is on hold. For the past few months, I’ve not been on my bicycle, neglecting my camera, and my video edits have gathered some dust. Why? – Well, life has steered me elsewhere, and this new path I’ve embarked on has given me a deeper sense of purpose and meaning. And so it's time to park my bike to the side, my time, focus, and energy now find their calling elsewhere.

On 29th August 2022, was my last day at the “office”, it’s been more than over a year now. This journey so far has been a great teacher in understanding the difference between being alone and being lonely. Discovering stability within instability, and having faith in the face of uncertainty, has expanded my perspective and made me wholeheartedly embrace life with boundless gratitude. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to venture into both wondrous and less fortunate places and connect with souls who’ve generously shared their smiles and even their frowns.

For now, the short story is – I’ve reunited with an old friend I met during my travels five years ago, in Cambodia. We’ve been working on a project that’s kept us busy and almost inseparable, like Batman and Robin but without the capes or the bat signal. It’s become the heartbeat of everything we do.

Now, for those eagerly awaiting more of my personal projects, hang in there! I promise to dust off that camera and get back to those video edits when I can. But for now, I need your unwavering support and love as I dive headfirst into this meaningful new chapter, in Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City.

And hey, if you ever find yourself in Vietnam, don’t be a stranger. Let’s catch up over tea or something.

Take care, stay healthy.
Peter Su

P.S. To all my old friends and family, it’s been a while, hasn’t it? I know I haven’t been very good in keeping in touch, but I trust life has been kind to you. To those who’ve been silently cheering me on or sending good vibes my way, I thank you.

From Chicken Wings to Sci-Fi Dreams: Beyond the Chicken and Chips Shops

Some may say Singapore is a modern-day sci-fi utopia or the polar opposite? Many hail it as one of the safest cities globally, and my time here has made me truly understand why. Comparing this to my childhood, in the so-called 'Gangster endz' of southeast London, with chicken and chip shops and roadmens at every block, having to watch your back walking home at night. Life here has been on "easy mode."

In my journey here, I explored Lee Kuan Yew's legacy. He once remarked that "today's children do not understand what it's like to be poor." Many of us now live in comfort without the past's hardships. In an era of convenience, taps provide hot and cold water, cozy beds await, and food is summoned like magic. But I wonder, what's life on "hard mode"? How does one grow, nurture grit, and face challenges with an unwavering mindset?

Singapore might seem an obvious choice to bring up a family up. But Yet, toss them back to 1959 – would they swim or sink? When discomfort and challenges knock, what's our survival rate?

Now I'm not saying send your kids to London for a chicken and chip shop experience with road men. But living there developed a "street sense," a radar for interesting characters, especially when travelling. It all boils down to this: good things happen when you step out of your comfort zone.

Somehow, in the land of difficulties, outside the comfort zone, we dig deeper into our bag of resilience, cook up ingenious solutions, and discover just how strong our superhero capes are. Just like riding my bike, the ride isn't always smooth, but it's like we're crafting our life stories with every challenge we tackle.

So, when was the last time you cranked life to "hard mode"?

Thank you for reading
Peter

PS.
Sadly there are no Chicken and Chips shops in Singapore, but the chicken and rice here is the bomb!

Suicidal Thoughts: Taking Care of Your Garden 🌱

“I was going to kill myself,”… were the heartbreaking words that my friend said to me during our phone call one day. I’ll never forget it. At that moment, I remember thinking, I couldn’t relate. From my perspective, life is so beautiful, offering endless wonders to see and experience. How could someone feel such despair and desire to take their own life and be gone?

It was a stark reminder that our inner battles are often invisible to others. This reminded me of the incredible power of our inner voice. Every day, minute, and second, the way we spend speaking to ourselves, the thoughts we entertain and give time to, and the influences we absorb externally, whether from TV or social media, can profoundly impact our mental well-being. It’s essential to be conscious of this internal dialogue and what you feed it, as it shapes our perception of the world and ourselves.

As I continue my cycling journey, I’m reminded of the value of being my own cheerleader and embracing my delightful quirks. It’s like nurturing a garden within 🌱, where each thought and emotion plays a crucial role in blooming the flowers of positivity and resilience. Life’s an amusing adventure, with ups, downs, and some unexpected comedic moments—just like sometimes those bike falls that keep me laughing, but in a more painful way! 🚲😄 (Fingers crossed—no more planned!)

🙏Dear Future-Self, and to those who need to hear this, remember, you are deserving of love, understanding, peace and happiness. So, be mindful of how you talk to yourself and the energy you allow into your life. Take care of your garden.

Thank you for reading,
Peter

P.S.
Rest assured, that friend has moved on to a better place.

Three-Legged Dog: A Pawsitive Story

During my time in Singapore, an old story resurfaced in my mind—the "Three-Legged Dog." I had the honour of caring for Bear, a charming three-year-old white Labrador carrying a few extra, ahem, pounds. The Vet said he must cut down his meals. So portion control became our mantra. Determined to help Bear shed those pounds, I proposed a plan: let's hit the pavement and run together. The owner chuckled, claiming Bear hadn't run in ages. But I was on a mission to make a difference.

As the days turned into weeks, we reached a Labracadabra turning point—a moment of trust and comfort when I unleashed Bear from his leash. The joy on his face was priceless. We began jogging and running side by side, witnessing Bear's inner Usain Bolt emerge (well, sort of, before he needed a break, here and there).

Bear's journey reminded me of the tale of the "Three-Legged Dog." Despite losing a leg in an accident, that courageous dog did not spend a minute, dwelling on the past. He embraced life, wagging his tail and making the most of every moment. There's something about dogs, they sure know how to move forward, one paw at a time. (Did you catch that pun?)

A reminder to my future-self, no matter what life throws at you, when the going gets tough, keep moving forward. Change your perspective, and you'll change your life.

Thank you for reading

Peter

PS.
Do not start suggesting ripping your dog’s leg off. Bear and I are incredibly grateful for our limbs and all they allow us to do. Cheers.

I met a Millionaire Taxi Driver, and this is what he said to me...

As I touched down in Singapore, an unexpected encounter awaited me—a charismatic millionaire taxi driver who whisked me away to my humble hostel. Intrigued by his decision to continue working, he confided with a mischievous smile that "doing nothing" wasn't his cup of tea, and escaping his wife's occasional nagging provided an amusing side benefit. But what truly captivated me was his unwavering belief in the transformative power of having a vision. His parting words echoed in my mind, "Never lose sight of your vision."

It reminded me of a book by my old boss, titled "Drivers: A Transformational Journey," where he delved into helping leaders build successful and sustainable organizations. He emphasized the importance of setting a clear vision as the first step, for it provides purpose and direction. Without it, an organization struggles to achieve its goals.

The millionaire taxi driver's words struck a deep chord within me, resonating not just with my own aspirations but also with the dreams and ambitions of the people I've encountered on my travels, as well as my loved ones back home. They served as a poignant reminder that purpose takes on diverse forms—whether it's nurturing a loving family, cultivating lasting connections, or finding joy in everyday moments.

I cherish this encounter as a gentle nudge to cultivate my own vision and purpose in life.

Thank you for reading.

Cheating Death: Swim or Die from Singapore to Malaysia

Here I stand with my bicycle, basking in the serenity of Taiping Lakes. I'm reminded a guy name Jacq, a fascinating older gentleman in my hostel. Despite his not so obvious Indian-Chinese heritage and rugged demeanour, we slowly connected.
It was Jacq's remarkable story that left me in awe. He had a few crazy life stories but there was one I'll never forget.

To avoid jail or an impossible fine, he swam from Singapore to Malaysia, which was a death wish in itself. For over 6-8 grueling hours, he battled currents and zigzagged through waves, whilst avoid the police coast guards ships and spot light, defying fate itself.

The level of determination and mental toughness , the desperate fight to survive, he displayed is beyond my comprehension.

Jacq's story taught me a profound truth: when we face adversity head-on, with unwavering determination, we discover the strength within us to conquer any challenge.

Thank you, life.🙏🏼

PS.
Since then, Jacq never stepped back to Singapore.

Lost in Translation, Found in Red Bean Soup: A Night Cycle Adventure in Taiping

Greetings from the land of Summer Rolls! What an adventurous week it has been. Let me tell you, Asia's summer is like a whole new level of heatwave compared to back home. But hey, I'm not complaining. Who knew I could soak up so much Vitamin D in one go?

Reflecting on this photo, cruising through the streets of Taiping at night was cool, in both senses of the word. Just warm enough to indulge in an ice-cold red bean soup dessert. I remember this one incident where I stumbled upon a shop and, thanks to my less-than-impressive Malay language skills, ended up with a piping-hot bowl of red bean soup. Talk about a surprise! After a hot sweaty cycle. But you know what? It's moments like these that remind me how life takes unexpected turns, and even when things don't go as planned, I'm grateful to be halfway across the world, savouring a dessert that costs a mere 30 pence. I count my blessings, including surviving some hair-raising near-misses on the road. Being alive every day is a blessing.

PS.
I downed that hot soup like a champ, no regrets.

and you'll change your life.

Cheers,
Peter

Wet and Wild Adventures: How I Learned to Dance in the Rain

As I ventured into Taiping, the rain unleashed its fury upon me, as if the town had a personal vendetta against umbrellas. It turns out this place was no ordinary rainy town— I learned it had earned the nickname "Rain City." It felt like a tropical London, but with fewer skyscrapers, posh accents and chicken chip shops. Yet, there was something captivating about this place. What was meant to be a one-week stay effortlessly stretched into a month.

The persistent rain served as a poignant reminder of a quote that has stayed with me for a long time: "There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing." Trust me, my poor fashion choices faced the ultimate test. But hey, amidst the relentless showers, and the absence of sunshine and rainbows, I realised that our outlook on life can transform even the wettest of situations. So embrace the rain, change your perspective, and let it wash away your worries. After all, a little rain never hurt anyone... except maybe my hairstyle.

Cheers, Peter.

From Pedals to Progress: Embrace the Urban Indiana Jones Within You

Every time I hop on my bike and explore a new city, I feel like the urban Indiana Jones (minus the fedora and whip, of course). The thrill of the unknown lies ahead with every unfamiliar road I take. It's like a choose-your-own-adventure book, but with more pedalling and less page-turning. This whole experience reminds me of the importance of taking risks and stepping outside our comfort zones, because that's where the real excitement lies.

Don't worry if you're not ready to take a giant leap of faith - starting small can still make a big difference. Maybe it's pushing yourself to do one extra rep at the gym or running an extra kilometre. or even networking with a new stranger each day (just make sure they're not too scary-looking). It may feel uncomfortable at first, but that's how growth and progress happen, it all starts with being uncomfortable before you eventually get comfortable. And who knows? With a bit of bravery, you too could become the urban Indiana Jones of your own life.

Thank you for reading.

Boobee Lesson: The Power of Reframing

I pedalled through the charming streets of Taiping, Malaysia, and I couldn't help but chuckle at the sight of BooBee Street. It's not every day you get to take a break on Boobees, right?

But on a serious note, my time working for a sales, leadership, and mindset consultancy was a pivotal moment in my career. It was there that I learned about the transformative technique of "Reframing." It's like switching to a different pair of glasses to see things from a fresh angle. Reframing helps you find the silver lining in even the darkest situations.

For instance, when I lost my phone for two weeks, I reframed it as a "phone detox" instead of freaking out. And when I missed my flight from Vietnam to Malaysia, I saw it as an opportunity to explore Vietnam. Even when I am cycling and my legs are tired, I reframe my thoughts to "I love the challenge and the workout it gives my quads and b***y."

In business and in life, challenges are inevitable, whether it's a demanding colleague, a flooded inbox, or a bad driver. Reframe —change your perspective, and you'll change your life.

Thank you for reading.

Rain Tree Walk at Night: A Reminder to Stop and Smell the Durian

It's been a while since my last post, but I'm here and alive, despite a silly bike accident that could've been tragic 🤕. Thankfully, nothing was broken. I've been distracted by a few side quests that have appeared in my life, but for all the right reasons.

But it did get me thinking about something important: time. The last time we get to do something can come so unexpectedly. The last time I cycle on this road, the last time I get to say good morning, the last time we laugh together, or the last time I get to hug someone, or the last time I sniff those smelly durians. These moments, especially when travelling and meeting new people, make me appreciate the value of time and how important it is to cherish every moment. Life is unpredictable, and we never know when the last time will be the last. But these little life reminders bring me back to a place of gratitude and remind me to be more present and passionate with our time and what we do, whether professionally or personally.

Thank you, life. 🙏

PS.

Durians may have a short shelf life, but their impact on your taste buds and memories can last a lifetime.
