Between stillness and flight

For a while, the kestrel remained perched above the long grass, scanning the ground below. From that exposed position, every movement mattered: a slight turn of the head, a change in posture, a brief pause before taking flight.

Common kestrels are masters of open ground, using their exceptional vision to search for prey among the vegetation. This series captures just a few moments from that sequence watchful stillness, quiet observation, and finally the instant when the perch is left behind and the hunt continues.

Between feathers and silence

The Mandarin Duck is undoubtedly one of the most striking birds found in our parks and wetlands. Yet its remarkable colours are not always revealed in the same way.

Throughout this carousel, small changes in posture uncover details that can easily go unnoticed: the long orange feathers along the neck, the green and purple sheen of the head, and the intricate patterns woven through its plumage.

In one of these images, the male raises and stretches his wings, a movement that forms part of the care and maintenance of his feathers. For a bird, plumage is far more than appearance; it must be kept in good condition to provide insulation and protection, while remaining capable of supporting flight.

Sometimes, all it takes is a few extra seconds of observation to discover that even the simplest movement can reveal an extraordinary amount of detail.

Two owls. One ancient tree. And a home shaped by time. 🦉🌳

Hidden within the deep cavities of this old trunk, two Tawny Owls sit quietly in separate hollows. From the outside, the tree appears weathered and broken, marked by years of storms, decay and change. But those same wounds have created shelter.

For these owls, every hollow tells a different story. A place to rest, to watch, and to disappear almost completely into the darkness when danger approaches.

Moments like this are a reminder that old trees are far more than part of the landscape. Their cracks, cavities and decaying wood can become essential homes for wildlife.

Sometimes, what looks old and broken is simply making space for another life. 🌿🦉

Through the mist

There are mornings when the landscape seems to disappear, leaving only fragments of the wildlife within it.

This red deer stag remained almost motionless in the mist, his antlers emerging from the pale morning haze. As the fog shifted, more deer gradually became visible around him — first as faint silhouettes, then as shapes moving quietly through the grass.

The same stag appears throughout this sequence, framed differently each time as the mist changed the scene around him.

For a wildlife photographer, moments like this are a reminder that sometimes the landscape does not need to reveal everything. A silhouette, a pair of antlers and a few fleeting shapes can be enough to tell the story.

Three little owls

Hidden inside the hollow of an old tree, three Little Owl chicks watch the world beyond their nest.

At this stage, the nest cavity is still their centre of life — a place to rest, shelter and wait for their parents to return with food. Their soft, downy plumage and bright yellow eyes are unmistakable signs of young birds that are rapidly developing.

Soon, the darkness of this hollow will no longer be enough. Their wings will take them beyond the entrance, and the familiar tree will become just one small part of a much larger territory.

For now, though, three curious faces remain together in the shadows, quietly watching the world outside.

Learning from the beginning

For a Great Crested Grebe chick, learning to feed is part of growing up.

In the first frame, an adult carries a fish across the water — a reminder of the work involved in providing food for a growing chick.

The following two images show the youngster with a fish of its own, still learning how to handle a slippery and awkward meal. Getting the right grip and positioning the fish correctly is not as simple as it looks, especially when the prey is large enough to be difficult to swallow.

These photographs capture two stages of the same story: an adult providing, and a young bird learning.

For the chick, every meal is also part of becoming independent.

A young life in the wild

For a young Red Fox, the world is still a place of discovery.

This cub paused among the woodland floor, its juvenile coat still soft and its features not yet fully developed into those of an adult fox. At this stage, much of its life is about learning — exploring its surroundings, developing hunting skills and gradually becoming independent.

The direct gaze in this frame lasted only a moment. Behind those young eyes is an animal at the beginning of a demanding journey, one that will eventually take it away from the safety of the den and into a life of its own.

There is something timeless about seeing a Barn Owl at rest.

Early in the morning, this individual settled on an old wooden post, surrounded by the soft green of the countryside. The light was gentle, revealing the warm golden tones of its plumage and the unmistakable heart-shaped face that gives the species its distinctive appearance.

Barn Owls are primarily nocturnal hunters. Their extraordinary hearing and specialised facial disc help them locate prey in low light, often hunting small mammals over grassland and farmland.

For a brief moment, though, there was no hunting, just a quiet pause before the day fully began.

The morning light on Skomer Island has a way of making everything feel quieter.

Among the coastal grass, an Atlantic Puffin pauses for a moment, its bright bill standing out against the soft colours of the island. During the breeding season, these colours become especially striking, with the bill showing the vivid orange, red and yellow tones that make puffins so recognisable.

Skomer is one of the most important places in Britain for Atlantic Puffins, and during spring and summer the island becomes a remarkable breeding ground for seabirds.

But sometimes a photograph doesn’t need a dramatic moment.

At first light.

Before the day fully begins, the landscape changes character.
A Red Deer stag stands quietly against the rising sun, his antlers reduced to a dark silhouette in the golden morning light.

For a few minutes, the low sun transforms the familiar landscape into something almost abstract — a meeting of light, mist and form, with the stag standing at the centre of it all.

Red Deer are Britain’s largest land mammal, and mature males carry their impressive antlers for much of the year. In autumn, these become particularly important during the rut, when stags compete for access to females.

But there is no drama in this moment. Just a stag, a quiet morning, and the first light of another day.
