🚨 Should You REALLY Scrap a Perfectly Good Petrol Car for an EV? 🔋⛽
A new study has sparked a huge debate after suggesting that, in some circumstances, replacing a working petrol car with an EV could reduce lifetime carbon emissions.
Sounds strange, right? 🤔
Your petrol car has already been manufactured. Scrapping it means building another vehicle, producing a battery and using more raw materials.
But the study’s argument is that an EV’s higher manufacturing emissions can eventually be offset by avoiding petrol-related emissions during years of driving.
The researchers’ model found that replacing a petrol car early could produce significant lifetime carbon savings, with the manufacturing “payback” potentially happening after several years of EV use.
But there’s a HUGE catch. 👀
A model isn’t the same as real life.
If you sell your perfectly good petrol car, it probably doesn’t disappear. Someone else buys it and keeps driving it. So the emissions haven’t necessarily vanished—they’ve simply moved to another driver.
And not everyone drives the same distance.
A high-mileage taxi, delivery van or company fleet could potentially benefit much sooner from electrification than a lightly used family car that only covers a few thousand miles a year.
🚗 The replacement car matters too.
Swapping a small, efficient petrol hatchback for a massive EV with a huge battery isn't the same calculation as replacing a thirsty, high-mileage SUV with a smaller EV.
So perhaps the real question isn't:
“Petrol or electric?”
It’s:
“Which vehicle should be replaced, when, and with what?”
A sensible transition could focus first on high-mileage vehicles, older inefficient cars, cleaner electricity, smaller EVs and better battery recycling.
🔋 EVs can offer major emissions benefits—but scrapping every working petrol car immediately may not be the simple green solution some headlines suggest.
