Happy St David’s Day, 'Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus', to all my Welsh relatives, known and unknown ❤️

31/12/2023

I suppose the last day of the year is a good day for reflection.
I am remembering phrases and little wisdoms that I remember hearing, when growing up.
My dad.
Never try and stop a pig in a poke.

My mum (she had loads)
You will get more with a tickle than you will a slap.
If there were more hugs in the world, there would be less wars.
(Don’t rush) Better to be late in this world than early into the next.

A more recently discovered one is;
When seeking revenge, take two shovels, one to bury them and one to bury yourself.

The most recent one that got my attention is this;
To forgive is to release a prisoner, then realise that prisoner is you.

Which wisdoms or phrases have stuck with you ?
Any of the above?
Or ones that are unique to you and your family/friends ?

Last Friday I had the good fortune to go on a guided tour of Abbey Mills, pumping station, with a party from the City of London Guides Association. It was completed in 1880, as part of Sir Joseph Bazalgette’s grand plan of an amazing network of tunnels and Pumping stations, which brought a comprehensive sewage and drainage system to Victorian London.

Morning all
Very cold this morning in the City, but not cold enough to Freeze the River Thames. From 1209, when the first stone London Bridge was completed up to 17th Century and probably beyond the Thames would freeze over and Frost Fairs would be held on the Frozen river.
The river was wider and shallower and the many stone supports of the Bridge made it flow much slower. It could be slippery out so take care, wrap up warm.

The recent Storms have reminded me of an old City story. After the Great Fire in 1666, Sir Christopher Wren was made the The Kings Surveyor, part of his instruction was to build a new St Pauls and Rebuild 50 City Churches (in the end it was 51, but that’s another story)
One of those churches was St Dunstan’s in the east. The parishioners request was that is was rebuilt in its orinigal Gothic Style ( unusual for Wren) at the top he built a unusual but extremely impressive spire supported by Flying buttresses. it was so unusual the stone masons who built it thought it would collapse when the scaffolding was removed. Wrens Daughter was so convinced it would stand she lay underneath it when the scaffolding was removed and it stood strong to the surprise of many.

Fast forward a few years to November 1703 there was devastating storm, that caused many chimney stacks and church spires to collapse and also caused lots of structural damage to buildings. Allegedly Sir Christopher was woken and when told said, I’d wager that St Dunstans spire is still standing and it was and it still stands today but the body of the Church was partially destroyed during WW2, but has been turned in to one of the City’s, most beautiful and enchanting gardens, which is open to the public.
Still a bit windy out, so please be careful and I hope to take you on a tour of the Historic City of London soon 😁
