architect Rafael Viñoly has admitted he knew the facade of his curvy Walkie Talkie skyscraper in London would focus an intense beam of sunlight onto a neighbouring street, but says that he "didn't realise it was going to be so hot"

The Diocese of Beirut is the largest of the Church of Antioch's fourteen dioceses. The Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Beirut, Lebanon's capital, is the diocese's principal temple. There's also St. George's Church in Beirut, which was established in the Middle Ages and which we discussed at the 'Jerusalem Candle.' The rectangular St. Nicholas Cathedral in Beirut has two storeys, with services held on both the first and second. The dome was given an unusual treatment: it is covered in red tiles, and the belfry is quite small. Russian painters who live and work in Greece painted the majority of the sacred images in the Cathedral.

A Zawiya (prayer area) named after Sheikh Abu Nasr al-Yafi was established on this spot in the 19th century. Souk Abu Nasr, together with the Zawiya, was located in the same region and operated until 1975. The Mohammad Al-Amin Association was founded in the 1950s in response to earlier efforts by Beiruti families to replace the Zawiya with a mosque named after Mohammad and to obtain more land. The project was never completed. It took decades of planning to secure enough land adjacent to the ancient Zawiya to construct the new mosque. The foundation stone for the Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque was placed in November 2002, thanks to a contribution from late Prime Minister Rafic Hariri. The 48-meter-high structure has a constructed area of around 11,000 square meters.
