🇯🇲 Where Every Ting Nice 🐐

Paradise Romford is a humble but thriving family-run restaurant nestled just outside of Romford Town ring road, beside Cotton's Park.

Here, it's all about good vibes and good food. Their flavours were well-balanced and the food was made with love.

First to arrive, was the Saltfish dumpling. This was my very first dumpling and I was amazed with it. It was big and hearty but so light and fluffy. The dumpling was sweet and fried to a perfect golden brown. The Saltfish filling was generous and spiced perfectly. The heat from the chilli comes through gently, it was the perfect level for me.

The Pepper steak dumpling was nice too, but I prefer my beef a little softer so the Saltfish was the clear winner.

When the Chicken pasty came, I was half expecting the usual Jamaican patty which you can now sometimes find in the supermarket. This on the other hand looked lovingly handmade. Again, it was not shy of filling and made a great sized snack. The pastry was buttery and cooked to beautiful golden brown. I could eat 10 of those.

By the time mains arrived, I half regretted the number of starters ordered (but then again I'm glad I did because they were fantastic). The specials came with a side of rice, veg and plantains. All of which were beautifully cooked and prepared. The Curry Goat was moist, spiced well and cooked so tenderly it fell off the bone. The sauce, I pretty much lapped up the whole thing. The Jerk Chicken was well-marinated. It was sweet, tangy and had just a hint of spice. Much like spicy BBQ.

There is a consistency here. Of food that is generous and hearty but made with such a light touch and executed beautifully. I wished I had more room for that rum cake, I thought as I finished the last of the Guinness punch.

Considering the amount of food we had, it was competitively priced at £17.50 per person and was more than enough for 2. You could do without the extra starter and instead opt for a dessert to round off the evening.

If you've visited Paradise, let me know what you tried!

Everything we had:
- Saltfish dumpling
- Pepper steak dumpling
- Chicken pasty
- Jerk chicken special
- Curry goat special
- Guinness punch

🇻🇳 Taste of Saigon 🍜

Have you been to The Quadrant recently?

It is beginning to feel like an independent food hub. It's latest addition, Bánh4Mi, is a cute little café which brings something a little different to Romford. Given that the only other Vietnamese establishment I know is in Hornchurch, this for me is a very welcomed addition to the town.

As Vietnamese cuisine is known for its savoury noodle broths with fresh herbs and delicious baguettes. This was exactly what we tried.

We went for their Pho Special which came with slices of beef, chicken and beef ball. The broth was savoury and flavourful. There was a good amount of meat and plenty of noodles! The garnish of mung bean sprouts, mint and chilli complimented this dish and brought a lot of freshness and crunch. It was a very strong start!

The Pork Baguette on the other hand was also a very solid main. The baguette was beautifully golden, crispy and warm. It was evenly filled with chunks of freshly grilled pork, coriander and a very savoury sauce. The cucumber and pickled carrots kept this dish light and fresh which makes it a perfect lunch for the summer.

We also tried the Prawn Summer Roll which was well filled but felt it could be a little better seasoned. It came with a thick peanut style sauce which was nice. But am unsure if they went well together. We also ordered a Mango Sago which was a large bowl of what felt like a mango yoghurt topped with pieces of fresh mango and little balls of sago. It was a cool and refreshing end to a meal.

All in all, it was competitively priced at £13.50 per person and was certainly filling enough for 2 people.

If you've visited Bánh4Mi, let me know what you tried!

Everything we had:
- Summer Rolls
- Grilled Pork Baguette
- Pho Special

🇮🇳 Chit-chat with some Chai🥤

It's wonderful to see that there are so many small businesses opening up in Havering. Recently, I tried Gupshup - which means chit-chat in Hindi. They opened in Collier Row back in 2023 and it is a thriving business serving the needs of the local community.

Gup Shup - Chit Chat Chai isn't your typical sit down, white tablecloth, formal Indian restaurant. It is a much more casual eatery serving all sorts including burgers and fry ups in addition to traditional Indian street food and grill. A fun little restaurant offering a place for friends and family to chill and hang out, they even have some board games you could play with.

As we wanted to try an array of dishes, we ordered the Street Food Thaal which included a chaat (snack), some street food items, dessert and drinks for 2. We also ended up ordering an off the menu lamb with naan bread. We were first served the lamb which was tender and slow cooked to perfection. The sauce was light and even though it was only mildly spicy, it was a delight. The naan bread was alright. It was soft and fluffy but nothing to shout about.

Next came our platter of Street Food goodies. The star of the show was clearly the Lamb Samosa which was the most outstanding samosa I have had. It was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The pastry was so more-ish and well-filled. Definitely a must try!

The other supporting acts were decent however, I feel that their strengths are in traditional Indian food. I didn't much rate their chicken wings or masala chips which I thought were more like sweet chilli chips than masala flavoured. But their pakoras and chaat were yummy. They also make a mean chai.

If you've visited Gupshup, let me know what you tried!

Everything we had:
- Slow cooked lamb with naan
- Papri Chaat
- Lamb Samosa
- Seekh Kebabs
- Pakoras
- Chicken 65
- Tandoori wings
- Masala chips
- Gulab Jamun
- Karak Chai

🍰 Cake and Grilled Meats? 🍖

Dulce, an artisan Eastern European deli and bakery has just opened their 2nd shop in Romford on South Street.

Now that the weather's brightened up, we're entering into . If you're looking to pick up some tasty marinated pork neck and sausages, this is an ideal place. Try it alongside Eastern European wine, pickles and perhaps some charcuterie as well. And whilst you are busy doing your shopping, you may be getting hungry from smelling all the barbecued meats on offer.

For £6.99, you have a choice of grilled steak, sausages, meat rolls or chicken with either fries or potatoes. And if you are extra hungry, there's tiramisu for £2.99 on offer or you could wander to their bakery counter where you can get pastries for £2 or a cake slice for £2.50!

I tried their meat rolls, fries and two types of pastry - apple and sour cherry.

First up, the meat roll (a.k.a. mici). Now, where do I even begin? This was a wonderful introduction to what Dulce had to offer! The meat roll was beautifully charred, whilst retaining all the moisture of the meat. It was tender, juicy and flavourful! The addition of mustard was subtle and enhanced the flavour of the meat.

The fries were a nice accompaniment but it wasn't anything to shout about. It did it's job. If I was to be picky, I think it could do with a bit more seasoning and a bit less on the meat roll. But overall this was a very solid start!

On to dessert. The pastry itself was nice and flaky but the filling is what you are really paying for here. Both pastries were nicely packed with generous amounts of sour cherry or apple. They were mildly tart and not overly sweet. The apple version really reminded me of a McDonald's apple pie filling in the texture and consistency. Lovely!

Located opposite the Gym Group, it's a great location for commuters or anyone stopping by in the town centre.

I attended Havering's Knife Crime Summit held in Romford Baptist Church on Monday. It gave the community an opportunity to have a dialogue with various organisations involved in tackling knife crime. This is a step in the right direction and hopefully there's more to come with actionable steps to tackling knife crime!

Thank you Romford Baptist Church for hosting!

🇯🇵 Could this be Romford's answer to Itsu? 🇯🇵

I was excited to see that a new Japanese sushi restaurant has opened on South Street in Romford Town. Sushi Handroll opened on 2nd March and is doing 25% off on opening week!

As a restaurant that prides itself on quality ingredients and freshly made sushi, I was pleased to see that they had all sorts of sushi on the menu. And if raw fish isn't your thing they also have vegan platters and hot food like gyozas, rice bowls, and noodle.

I tried:
Duck Gyoza
Dragon Roll
Salmon Selection Sushi Box
Chicken Katsu Curry
Chocolate Dorayaki - Japanese Pancake

The Dragon Roll was an inside-out sushi roll made to look like a dragon with ripe avocado resembling the scales and features prawn katsu, cucumber, and sweet eel sauce (which despite its name does not contain any eel but is typically used as a sweet glaze). This was a smart-looking plate of food. The prawn was crispy and the avocado was perfectly ripe. However, the letdown here was the rice. It was just far too mushy and there was hardly any seasoning.

The Salmon Selection was a celebration of salmon served in various ways. There was salmon roll (maki), salmon with avocado, salmon nigiri (oval-shaped rice) and sashimi. However, the salmon was not fresh. This was more noticeable when you have it as a sashimi. The only way to eat it was to douse it in wasabi and soy sauce.

The Duck Gyoza was the real big letdown. The skin was crispy but lacked colour. But more importantly, the vegetable accompaniments felt like it had started to go off. It wasn't pleasant.

The Chicken Katsu curry was much more pleasant. The chicken was crispy and evenly cooked. The rice was not water-logged. They just needed the curry to have more depth of flavour. Adding an Oxo cube or two should do the trick.

To round off the meal, I had Chocolate Dorayaki. At £3.99, this was a steep price for what seemed to be bought on-mass. I wouldn't recommend it.

Overall, it may be that they're experiencing teething issues. However, given their menu is 80% sushi and they pride themselves on providing freshly made sushi and on using quality ingredients, this was a letdown. Their sushi rice needs to be cooked consistently and seasoned to taste. And the fish needs to be fresher. What they do seem to do well is serve up crispy fried chicken, I just want more oomph in the curry sauce.

🇲🇾 Authentic Malaysian-Chinese food in Romford! 🇲🇾

If you're out in Romford Town today, why not warm yourself up with a hearty noodle box from Yum Yum. Situated in the market square, Yum Yum is a key presence here in Romford. You can't miss his signature black and yellow flag, which can be spotted from a mile away!

Uncle serves up a range of authentic Malaysian goodness! A small box of noodle or rice with meat goes for £5 (£6 for a regular). For those who don't fancy spicy food, there's Salt and Pepper Chicken, Chicken in Black Bean sauce and of course, Sweet and Sour Chicken. If you'd like to kick it up a notch, why not try his Malaysian Chicken Curry or my personal favourite, Kung Po Sweet Chilli Chicken🐥

He also has some snacks to choose from like Steamed Pork Bun for £2.50 and
5 x Vegetable Spring Rolls for £1 (How do you say no to that?)

We tried:
- Small Kung Po Chicken with Noodle
- Small Black Bean Chicken with Noodle
- Steamed Pork Bun
- Vegetable Spring Rolls

I've tried Yum Yum several times before and uncle never fails to cook perfect noodles! Key to a great noodle dish, is texture. It's springy, so more-ish and has the right level of seasoning. I chow-ed it down in seconds! What I also love about Yum Yum is that you get a good amount of chicken. And good sized chicken pieces too! The Black Bean sauce has a really subtle savoury, earthy flavour and it coated the chicken pieces well. The Kung Po is sweet and has a good level of spice to it. Perfect for a cold winter's day!

Next up, the Vegetable Spring Rolls. They were really good this time I tried them. Fried to a golden brown, crunchy and filled well.

This was my first time trying his Steamed Pork Buns. I was a little skeptical about ordering this. Because if you get an over-steamed bun, it is not pleasant to eat. If you've never tried a soft fluffy steamed bun, it may not be the most visually appealing dish and was rather delicate to handle. But the pork filling was on point! I just wished there was more of it! The mince was mixed with chinese cabbage and aromatics. It was seasoned well and has a lovely fragrance from the Xiao Shing Wine.

At £2.50, I can't decide if it was a good deal or not. However, it was approximately, the size of my palm so it was a good size. You could share it between two and have a noodle box each and you'll definitely be full!
