You know it’s a big deal when the photo of me comes out. I arrived back from China on Sunday!

Of the many things that will stay with me is how Lao She’s (舒慶春）novels followed me around. I spent twelve days straight on trains, and one of my favourite things was waking up at twilight and seeing the world weave past my window.

In one of Lao’s short stories, a train heading home for Chinese New Year explodes as no one wants to report a small fire. The fireworks turn the train into an explosion of colour and light, and one morning, my train fireworks were thankfully outside. They’re used to signal good luck, and for me and the sender, they were good luck.
