EVERY CAMERA DESERVES A SECOND CHANCE!

Best known for black and white, Harman went and made a colour film. Phoenix II is the second version and it is a real step on from the first: finer grain, cleaner colour, more detail held in the highlights.

It runs warm on purpose. Late sun goes amber, greens go deep, and the contrast has proper bite. This is a look rather than a neutral film, which is exactly why people like it.

ISO 200 and standard C-41, so any lab can run it. Every frame here was shot on a Bronica 645RF around Madeira.

Everyone keeps asking us for a digicam, so here is one of our favourites. The Nikon Coolpix S3300 is a 2012 pocket compact with a CCD sensor, and that sensor is the whole point. Punchy colour, a bit of grain, and honest flash that your phone spends all its energy trying to remove.

Wide at 26mm so you fit the room in, 6x zoom so you are not walking closer, and proper optical stabilisation rather than the digital crop cheaper compacts fake it with.

Nothing to learn on day one. Switch it on, point, press.

Sale weeks are our favourite, mostly because we get to see which cameras find their people.

Five days left if you have been circling something. The Canon IXUS 100 IS is the one we point people towards when they want that flash-lit early-2000s look without editing a phone photo to fake it. The Sure Shot 70 Zoom is the one we would drop in a bag for a weekend and then forget about until something worth shooting turns up.
