Restaurant photographers - are you also comfortable photographing people? 🫣

When I first started working with restaurants I only focused on the food, because that’s what I was comfortable with and what I’d been shooting for the past few years.

However, I quickly learned that restaurants actually need a variety of imagery for their brand beyond just the food: interiors, lifestyle and importantly - portraits.

The people behind the brand.

Yes, potential diners want to know what the food looks like before they make a decision about whether or not to visit a particular restaurant.

But the chefs, sommeliers, bartenders, front of house and management staff are integral to the experience a guest will have when they dine somewhere.

I know it’s scary and intimidating to step out of your comfort zone and photograph a person rather than an inanimate plate of food, but trust me - when you can master this skill as part of your restaurant photography service, your work will go to another level for those clients.

So next time you have a restaurant shoot coming up, add some staff portraits to your shot list and broaden that portfolio!

Unpopular opinion: sometimes working for free does pay off in the future šŸ˜Ž

I am not embarrassed to say that I’ve done multiple collaborations with brands over the years to build relationships and strengthen my portfolio.

Those free projects I did are what have led me to my first paid projects, long-term client relationships and dream clients.

In an industry where the advice is usually that ā€œyou should never work for freeā€, I think it’s actually more important to be able to tell the difference between opportunities that are worth doing unpaid or not.

This is something I help my coaching clients with too, so they can analyse these opportunities and confidently make decisions about inbound collaboration enquiries, as well as create strong personal projects that move them in the direction they want their business to go in šŸ™Œ

Have you ever done a collaboration that led somewhere good? Or done one you wish you’d said no to?

Kruger National Park never fails to amaze me.

It’s one of the few places where I am totally happy to drive for 12 hours a day, several days in a row just to see wild animals.

One day you’ll see a pack of wild dogs hunting and then lionesses and their cubs feeding before 9am, other days you’ll be driving for hours and ā€œsee nothingā€. Each day is different and you never know what’s around the next corner, or hiding just out of sight in the bush!

Here are some of my favourite shots from our weekend in Kruger park a few weeks ago: lionesses and their cubs, wild dogs, fish eagle, plains zebra, lilac breasted roller, crocodile.

Since arriving to South Africa, we’ve been working on some really incredible conservation projects.

At we were able to blend our expertise in luxury hospitality storytelling with our passion for conservation and capture the experience of this unique place.

We explored just a fraction of their 6000 hectares reserve searching for the tigers and cheetah that live in their respective areas on this land, and learned from the guides about the work they are doing to protect these big cat species.

The remote lodge set atop the canyon is a stunning place to come back to after sunrise and sunset drives to enjoy home cooked meals, watch the rock dassies and chat about the exciting sightings of the day.

We have a lot of content from this project, we hope you enjoy the first few stills here!

Which camera angles are best for restaurant photography?

Someone asked me this recently and the honest answer is: it depends on the dish and the type of shot you’re wanting to achieve.

I like overhead or 45-90° angle shots for relatively flat dishes in order to capture the styling of the plated dish and all the colours and textures - otherwise it all gets lost when you take the shot from lower down. The crispy duck pancakes and sea bass dishes in this carousel are good examples of this.

Straight on shots work well for tall subjects, like the sushi in the second image.

The 45° angle generally works well for pretty much anything, so it’s a great back up when you’re struggling to get the shot!

I also love to include a human element when I can, and over the shoulder shots are great to get that POV feeling. Hands in the frame interacting with the food also invites viewers to imagine themselves in the most images.

Which angle is your go-to?

How did I end up here, documenting the visual stories of a wildlife and conservation project in South Africa’s Greater Kruger?

It wasn’t luck, or a random decision I made.

It’s what I’ve been dreaming of doing for years, and slowly I’ve made my way here through intentional projects and networking.

I’ve always had a passion for wildlife and nature, and when I realised that I could work in this industry using my creative skills and business, it kind of blew my mind.

I started booking onto wildlife photography trips to build my portfolio and reached out to some local nature organisations to help with them visual storytelling and marketing.

In September 2024 I came to South Africa to do a volunteer wildlife & conservation photography program, which I absolutely loved and I fell in love with capturing the research and conservation activities, as well as the wildlife.

I kept in touch with the team and and am now back here in South Africa together with documenting the opening of their new reserve that borders Kruger National Park.

It’s really cool to meet and work with a team so dedicated to their mission and I’m learning so much about not only the flora and fauna of the area, but also about their conservation plan for this piece of land.

Swipe through to see some of the birds I’ve photographed whilst here, as well as conservation activities like wildlife & tree data collection, and road clearing.

Special shout out to for my camera backpack that I’m using out here - it’s incredibly well designed for this trip and I’m loving it!

We rounded off our week in Cape Town by treating ourselves to a couple of nights at šŸ’œ

We’re often working at hotels like this, so it was actually so nice to enjoy our experience without getting the camera out šŸ˜…

On the morning we left there was such a beautiful sunrise though, had to get the drone out as we left the property (swipe to see it!).

Aside from that, I took a couple of photos on my phone just for memory’s sake and wanted to share them here because we loved our stay so much. The food, the design of the spaces and rooms, the massage and thermal suite, the wine tasting - all wonderful.

Thank you so much to the team at - I hope we will come back one day!

Your own beliefs could be holding your business back 😬

The stories you tell yourself about experience, pricing and readiness may feel like facts, but they’re not.

They’re just thoughts you’ve had so many times that they stopped feeling like thoughts. And they could be costing you…

Swipe through and see how many land a little too close to home. I’ve definitely struggled with 1 and 4 myself!

Is there one that resonates strongly? Drop it in the comments and let me know!
