It Was Me, black and white hand print. A double exposure made in camera of some graffiti and poster art found in Blackall street, Shoreditch. I think the message is pretty straightforward, a DJT poster with devil horns and crosses both up and down, symbols of good and evil etc. That’s the surface level reading, but the cartoony nature of the images and the words It Was Me (the phrase was actually It Wasn’t Me but cropped out) are suggesting that these are all stories we tell ourselves because in the end we are still metaphorically sitting in caves looking at pictures to guide our opinions thoughts. None of the images that made this photograph are real but are borrowed from other 2D artwork made by someone else, which I have just repeated with my own interpretation. I make double exposures to convey messages, so the images chosen are intentional, you just have to read between the lines. You can’t be religious and drop bombs on people, so which is it? Fake News nonsense.

Black and white handprint. Fishing is a key part of life on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. When old herring boats were unfit for sea they would be upturned, sealed with tar and used as boat sheds to store fishing equipment. The practice of recycling old boats goes back over a hundred years to around 1908.

Here’s a short video on how to do localised bleaching on a black and white darkroom print. Not always necessary but useful to know. The shop bought name of black and white bleach is called Farmers Reducer, essentially potassium ferricyanide (from cyanotype fame) and sodium thiosulphate (a basic form of black and white fix). You can use Ilford Rapid Fix instead. Farmers Reducer mixes these two chemicals together, which can often be too strong and depletes fast. Instead load your paper emulsion up with fix by dipping it in a tray for a minute or two, squeegee it off and apply potassium ferricyanide with a brush. The same chemical reaction will happen plus your chemicals will last longer. The technique in the video is called localised bleaching as only selected areas are lightened, not the whole print. It’s tricky but not impossible, have a go. The reason for me bleaching my print? The neg was no good, so rather than having a flat print I bleached. The selenium toner at the end enhances the contrast by deepening the shadows to make the highlights appear stronger. Just pull the print from the toner before the colour shift.

Black and white hand print. The pilgrims walk to Holy Island requires you follow the tall wooden posts when the tide is out for the safest route. But if the tide comes in you can always scramble up these towers and wait to be rescued. Saying that there are only two towers for a three mile walk, so I reckon you’re a bit screwed if you don’t get your timing right.

Black and White hand print of the start of a three mile walk across sand and thick mud, known as Pilgrim’s Way. The walk is only accessible when the tide is out, and has been a crossing point from the mainland to Holy Island since 635 AD when King Oswald gave the island to St. Aidan to build a monastery, making it a cradle of Celtic Christianity and home to figures like St. Cuthbert. For over a 1,000 years, monks, travelers, and faithful pilgrims crossed these shifting sands barefoot long before the modern asphalt road / causeway was built in 1954.
