The Burchell’s Zebra. 🦓

Due to being so dry, we didn’t see lots of zebras, but at the end of our stay we came across a small here amongst the tall dry grasses on the edge of the Winterthorn forest. The beauty of the Lower Zambezi is the varied habitat, but for me, being able to travel though the stunning forests is the biggest draw, never knowing who you’ll encounter within the forest, or on the fringes 🌳

My favourites, African Wild Dogs. If you want to see these guys then the Lower Zambezi, with is the place to go.

We had the most incredible encounters with the local pack. When they weren’t terrorising the local prey population they were chasing each other, the pups annoying the adults and just getting up to general mischief. 🐾🦴🐶

From the biggest carnivore in Africa, the African Lion, to the smallest, the Dwarf Mongoose.

These little guys can be easily passed by when looking for the big stuff but they’re just as interesting, scurrying about foraging for prey. They can be found in quite large groups, sometimes in the company of hornbills.

Whilst in the Lower Zambezi last year with we were able to track down the local pride at Old Mondoro most days.

With the stifling temperatures, a lot of the time they were hanging out in the scrub keeping cool, but a few times we not only witnessed a kill, but lovely interactions between the adults and cubs 🦁

Sundowners.

Leopards have always been my favourite but with the super hot temperatures when I was in the Lower Zambezi we only had a couple of daytime encounters, but luckily lots after dark.
This particular female we’d found earlier in the day, high in a tree, using the dense foliage to keep cool.
But at sundown she headed down for a drink before heading out to hunt.

During our time we had some incredible wildlife encounters.

One morning all was quiet on the fame front and we decided to stick with the snoozing lions. 🦁
Suddenly two of the older cubs stood up and headed over towards a lone Baboon. I thought the baboon would head up the tree but before it knew it, the cubs were on it.

What ensued was the cub’s first kill. The lionesses watched on & let the cubs play with the baboon for about 30 minutes until its screams died down and the other cubs came and had it for breakfast!

Chaos.

Back in October I was lucky enough to head back to the incredible Lower Zambezi on a shoot for , at the amazing .

We were spoilt with Wild Dog encounters. This particular encounter we found the dogs in the afternoon resting by the water, and when this elephant family headed down to drink, I knew there’d be trouble! 🐘

Check out my story for a video of the encounter!

I’m back. The small child on the right bit my laptop (as you do) so it had to go off for a very expensive repair, he clearly has the same jaw power as a jaguar.

The other day we had the most amazing sunrise & the fiery skies made getting the boys outside and ready for school a lot easier. In fact they were jumping for joy.

An actual New Year’s resolution that I’ll try to stick to.

I’m out and about on daily, so this year I am going to try and document life on our project with my a little more. Minimum once a week.

This morning we woke to a very cold 2025, freezing fog and a heavy frost. So a bale of hay was dispensed to the waiting herd. Luckily the fog began to lift but it still stayed at -2c until 10am 🥶

I’m currently in my second favourite place in the world, (after ). The Lower Zambezi National Park, and although I’m here to film at night. We’ve had some amazing daytime encounters with African Wild Dogs last week over at Chiawa Camp.

We were completely spoilt with incredible behaviour, including two kills! With the pack being over 30 individuals it’s the biggest I’ve encountered and photographing them proved quite tricky with a melee of dogs careering around the place! 🐕
