Esther Nelson
Local poet, part of the Hackney Migrant’s Centre, who has bern performing work about her experiences for over decade, in Hackney.

Vanessa Downie

Vanessa Downie is an established dance practitioner trained in a range of forms including African-contemporary dance.
Throughout her career, she has performed with TEDx, UEFA Champions League, Bloomberg New Contemporaries at ICA and Cloud Dance Festival, among others.

Vanessa’s work encompasses themes of diasporic identity, drawing inspiration from Afrofuturism. as a way of managing the complexities surrounding heritage and belonging and cultural dislocation.

Tajiyah Sulwana

Tajiyah Sulwana is a Malay-Muslim q***r poet, performance maker, and voice educator from Singapore, currently based between Singapore and London. Their interdisciplinary practice sits at the intersection of poetry, theatre, voice, and movement, exploring themes of diaspora, grief, faith, q***rness, language, and belonging. As a published poet in Between Q***r Teeth and a Barbican Young Poets alum

Clementina Allende Iriarte Clementina Allende Iriarte

Clementina is an English / Argentina actress. She received her training at East 15 Acting School and did further studies in Poetry with the University of Oxford. She is most recognised for playing the feature role of Sami in CBBC’s Princess Mirror-Belle. Further credits include The Farmer and The Clown (Bristol Old Vic and UK tour), Ten Days, Ploutos, the Saving of Santa (The Space Theatre), Clementina from Argentina (online) and others. Clementina specialises in Theatre, Television and Voice Acting.

Sarah Auber Sarah Auber

Sarah is a black British Actress and architect, trained as an actor at Drama Centre London. Her transdiscoplinary practice sits at the intersection of architecture, theatre, movement and film, Her work uses storytelling to explore diasporic women’s experience of the city.

We had to postpone this due to the fierce heatwave….So, please join us, on July 29th, from 7pm, for The Pavilion of Stories, at The Old Church, as part of this year’s LFA.

We will be back, at The Old Church, Stoke Newington, performing Sarah Auber will be performing with legendary local poet, Esther Nelson, of the Hackney Migrants Centre, and dancer Vanessa Downie Vanessa @ Khyal Arts among others.

The event forms part of my ongoing research which uses storytelling to explore diasporic women’s experiences of architecture and the city at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL.


10% of proceeds from the evening will go to the Hackney Migrant Centre.

Would you like an opportunity to share your work in progress?

Appropri8 Theatre invites you to submit for ‘The Pavilion of Stories’ - an evening of work in progress performances from diasporic communities, on the subject of women and migration to London. In Line with the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) for this performance we focus on the theme of Belonging. In our in our interpretation we focus on ho belonging is linked to belongings - the things that people bring with them…and leave behind. The things which foster a sense of identity.

Be your story be from the perspective of the first, second or third generation diaspora, we’d love to hear it.

Please, get in touch for further details and submit 150 words describing your work, along with any links, images or scripts to [email protected], with the subject 'Migration Stories'.

We are looking for spoken word, poetry, monologues and movement pieces or film.

The Pavilion of Stories will be hosted at The Old Church Stoke Newington on June 24th
