Upcoming event for teachers, artist educators and arts workers. THRESHOLDS: CULTIVATING CURIOSITY IN THE CLASSROOM | 4:30-6pm, Tuesday 2 July, 2026

What happens when entering the art classroom becomes an opportunity to cultivate joy and curiosity?

In this gathering, artist Jasmin Bhanji and AMSI’s Head of Art Joeanna Omotesho will introduce Thresholds: a practice where the entrance to the art classroom is subtly transformed using material and sensory interventions. These have included disco lights and music, projections of waves, and glitter curtains.

We’ll explore how these interventions have invited new ways of entering and experiencing the classroom, sparking different kinds of conversations with students. This ‘consultation by action’ has informed curriculum development, shaped around young people’s responses.

Through hands-on creative activity, conversation, and reflection, we’ll explore ways to support meaningful engagement in art. You’ll leave with practical ideas and fresh perspectives to take into your own context.

This gathering is for teachers from primary, secondary, EYFS and SEND settings, as well as artist educators and arts workers.

Thresholds has emerged during Liberating the Curriculum (LTC), a two-year programme with Arts and Media School Islington (AMSI) that creates time and space to develop a flexible, diverse curriculum. By making space for slowing down and being present, we hope to support young people to bring more of themselves to their art education.

LTC is part of a long-term collaboration between Cubitt Artists and AMSI and is generously supported by Freelands Foundation as part of their Inclusive Practice Fund.

For the past year, artist Becky Lyon has been leading workshops with the elders at Mildmay’s Care Home in Islington. This summer and autumn, we are back transforming the community table, which we meet around, into a landscape for us to playfully explore through touch and texture!

Each month, we will use different artistic processes and take a different multisensory journey through texture, moving through the Fluffy & Squishy, Bubbly & Foamy, Glossy & Silky, Rough & Ridgy, and Smooth & Sealed.

As we go, we will conjure different memories, emotions and imaginative possibilities. We also demonstrate that there are many ways to explore the world around us, wherever we are and whatever we have to hand.

For over a decade, the Cubitt team and collaborating artists have developed lasting relationships with Mildmay residents and staff through ongoing creative workshops and celebratory events across shared living spaces, greens and community centres.

🎨Looking back over the weekend’s final Community Press Think-in session in which we finalized the layout, print and fold of our community newsletter together. The making of this newsletter has included a collective design and editorial process. 🌞🖨️

Cubitt Community Press is a space to share local stories, document alternative histories, and support projects in our borough and beyond rooted in social justice. We believe in owning the tools of creation and using them to make things happen in and for our communities.

We are building on Islington’s long history of radical publishing, and since February 2026, we have been working on our third edition of our community newsletter, a community map of resources, memories and mutual aid projects in Islington, crowd sourced directly from people in the neighborhood.

We’re moving towards opening a Community Distribution Centre: a space to amplify stories from our borough across London (and beyond). In the coming years, we’ll be working through print and radio to support local organising, creative resistance, and collective storytelling as tools for social justice and radical imagination.

Applications Closing this Week! 🔔 ⏰🚨
DEADLINE 11:59pm SUNDAY 10 MAY - The Cubitt Curatorial Fellowship – now in its 15th edition

This unique opportunity for research and curatorial experimentation in the field of visual arts is based on a twenty-four month residency at the renowned Cubitt Gallery, the only such scheme in the UK. The Curatorial Fellowship has pioneered an individual model and developed into a major platform for curatorial development; leading Cubitt’s reputation as an experimental, artist-led institution for nurturing, showcasing, and reimagining emerging practice.

Since its inception in 2001, the Fellowship has supported fourteen curators & collectives at pivotal points in their career and propelled the work of over 400 emerging artists and curators, many that are now shaping the art world in organisations including; Glasgow International; Rijksakademie, Amsterdam; Kunsthalle Wien, or as artists and writers in their own right.

We are looking for a curator who has an in-depth knowledge of contemporary art, as well as enthusiasm for a wide range of thinking related to our growing programmes across Civic, Education, and Community activity. We are looking for someone with initiative and a commitment to dialogue and collaboration, within and outside our organisation.

The role will be based onsite at 8 Angel Mews, N1, London, before moving to a future home and offering possible off-site programmes as this process develops. Concluding next week! CUBITT COMMUNITY DISTRIBUTION CENTRE EXHIBITION
📍 Islington Local History Centre & Finsbury Library
📅 12 Feb – 30 Apr 2026

Cubitt Community Distribution Centre brings together material from Cubitt Community Press and Cubitt Community Radio alongside historic print and radio projects rooted in Islington 📻🖨️

This exhibition marks the start of a three-year programme exploring print and radio as shared community resources: tools for local organising, creative resistance, and collective storytelling.
Inspired by Islington’s long history of community-led media, the exhibition looks to past print and radio projects that fought to keep the borough liveable, welcoming, and shaped by the people who live here.

At a time of ongoing gentrification, displacement, and cultural erasure, this work turns to civic infrastructure as a space to practise new ways of organising and making together.

On display, material from 📢:
• The Islington Gutter Press (1972–1985)
•The Islington Bus Company & Islington Radio Project (1972–88)
• Cubitt Community Press (2025–26)

Opening event to be announced in March/April 2026.

Curated by: Alvaro Samuel Castro, Anahí Saravia Herrera, Francesca Fantoni, Laura McCandless.

Special thanks to Ruby Kerrison and Alicia Chilcott from Islington Local History Centre for all your support!
