On 16 February, Whitechapel Gallery hosts The Korean House. In dialogue with Zadie Xa’s House Gods, Animal Guides, and Five Ways 2 Forgiveness, this is an evening of discussion chaired by curator Yoojin Choi (V&A) with architect Je Ahn (Studio Weave) and art historian Charlotte Horlyck (SOAS) exploring the spiritual realm of the home in historic and contemporary Korean culture.

A symbol of both traditional notions of domesticity and contemporary ideas of home and family - the idea of the house collapses time. For Xa, the ‘hanok’, a traditional Korean house incorporated in her commission, represents a link between past and present, a space where the living and their ancestors coexist.

The panel will consider the Korean house from an architectural, mythological and cultural perspective, exploring the house’s role as witness to spiritual and folkloric belief systems, diasporic histories, and the daily rituals of lived experiences.
