I recently took part in another brilliant @1.question conversation with . This time, we asked: As art becomes easier to create, does it democratise or dilute it?
What begins as a question about creativity quickly becomes something much bigger: authorship, value, and what it means to be human as the tools we use continue to change.
After spending thousands of hours exploring new ways of creating, I’ve found myself falling in love with real photography even more. The tools available to us can generate almost anything we imagine, but they don’t have curiosity, doubt, memory or desire. They can produce. They don’t experience.
I’ve realised the value of a photograph isn’t simply what it shows, it’s the encounter behind it. The moment, the exchange and the relationship that created it.
As always with Sarah, the question was only the beginning. I don’t think the future of art is about democratising or diluting creativity. I think it’s challenging art to do the next thing.
