Four months on and we are still processing our recent exhibition at the The Stephen Lawrence Gallery - a neurodivergent aesthetic

Today, while talking about the exhibition for a new BBC 4 documentary, we realised there is still so much to unpack, share, learn and endless possibilities on how to expand the conversation on neurodivergence, aesthetics, and the performative nature of both.

Over five years, an idea became a published academic article. Some parts of the work have kept their original shape, while others transformed as our thoughts matured. This desktop documentary explores the tension between past and present. It serves as a reflection on the project The Screen is the Brain, as the artist questions his own identity—navigating the space between neurodivergent and neurotypical experiences.

“Spatial ability is not a simple matter. It is not just a picture-like memory for objects, places, and people. This kind of memory might be helpful in carrying out spatial tasks, but it is not at the core of what is meant by spatial ability. Spatial mechanical thinking involves the capacity to put the world together inside one’s head such that all things relate to all others in precisely understood ways. The distance and directional positioning between a whole host of things is so well understood that all become part of an interconnected system.” (Dyslexic Advantage, 2019)

DYSPLA, winner of the Saatchi Gallery Digital Artist of the Future Prize 2025, announces their major Artist Residency exhibition at the Stephen Lawrence Gallery, in Greenwich, London from April–May 2026. §1NDA - a neurodivergent aesthetic unpack, challenge and visualise what is meant by the new term, the neurodivergent aesthetic.

We are grateful to for the opportunity to explore the concept of a neurodivergent with colleagues, peers, and new friends.

The conversation co-existed with origami making. While our hands were busy our ability to follow the flow our thoughts took over.

Language is textual, it has texture. That’s why we can feel it. To mask ourselves is to hide our thoughts and hide our language.

To hide is to sit in the unsaid.

To censor that which can be used to create.
