“He’s up there” announced Trevor Parker, son of a Todmorden coal merchant to PC Alan Godfrey and PC Mervin Haig, motioning to a man’s body atop a ten-foot-high pile of coal. The dead man was wearing a jacket, shoes and trousers, but no shirt. On the back of his head and neck were strange burn-like marks. He was later identified as Zygmunt Adamski.

Adamski was a polish miner, who lived in Tingley, 20 miles from Todmorden. The day before he was due to give his god-daughter away at her wedding he went to the local shop to buy potatoes and never returned.
