Bluebell filter! You can't buy this lens filter, it's free! Natural, wild, insanely fiddly with any slight move giving a totally different feel to the picture. It plays wonderful havoc with the out-of-focus background. I like making subjects standout with shallow depth and bokehlicious backgrounds, and I love adding even greater depth by including blurry foregrounds. Way harder to control, the results feel natural being rarely perfect. No editing trickery here and all shot with the Ricoh GR III X compact camera.

3/365 daily photo challenge with the Ricoh GR III X

A selection of views during a quiet rural run. The GR III X slips really easily into the shoulder harness of my running backpack so it's easily accessible. Mid morning, April, the light is a little strong in these pictures but the range of sun and cloud cover made for some interesting shapes in the landscape. Monotone really shows up how good the lighting is in a photo probably because you're not otherwise distracted by colour, but the Hard Monotone in-camera profile is helping, creating such a dramatic effect at the push of a button.

Last share from this location for a bit, it's just so good and I've spent more time than normal playing in ACR with the Raw files! Here, the edit brings out the warmth and intensity of the sunrise while shaping and keeping the cool tones of the frosty hills. A little healing to remove a foreground distraction.

A wider perspective from the previous share, but this is still telephoto being at 125mm focal length, albeit with a 18:9 aspect ratio applied to focus in on the interesting section. This high resolution image could print up real big, heck cover a wall and the detail would still be crisp. Straight up, I've done a little masking to remove a bush on the foreground hill that distracted me. Not too much else really - it was around 10am on a sunny winter morning where the morning dew gets a but hazy so what you see here is real not any messing around with filters and such. There's something about this view that pleases my eye big time!

Love exploring the landscape with a telephoto lens - in this case with the new Nikon Z9 and Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 set to its 300mm focal length. This is a small haze-softened segment of a mighty vista, with a single filter applied and the shadows darkened to give a little extra contrast. It might not be obvious at first sight, but there are two sets of horses; in the mid and far distance. Upcoming review will be found on Tech Radar (and yes there's plenty of action photography included, despite me nursing a broken wrist)

From a stroll with Bea last night - such a gorgeous evening. 75% of these images are of the same cluster of trees + all of the pics are made within 200m of each other. Really pleased with the collection, do scroll through and let me know your favourite!
I think this park will be my go-to place with camera for the next few outings. The deer park is vast, plus with imminent autumn weather and rutting season, there are some exciting possibilities. Sunset definitely a winner here and will try out for a sunrise at some point too.

Mini update: I've written A LOT of camera gear reviews over the last year - check them out on sites like Tech Radar and Photography Blog.

Every now and then I do an opinion piece - like this one about upgrading from an old Nikon DSLR to a new Nikon mirrorless camera.

This feature is properly niche. I've essentially written to myself and now I'm convinced, hahaha. Just need a spare few £k!

I love this three picture sequence of Su and Tim on their wedding day back in July. It was a week after wedding lockdown was lifted and I was so happy to be able to respond to the last minute rebooking. We've all had to be adaptable to the circumstances that this crazy year has presented us, haven't we?!

The 30-person limit made it the smallest wedding I've ever photographed and I really enjoyed the (socially distant) intimate feel, plus all the little details unique to what I hope will be a brief time in our history.

Congratulations Su and Tim!

I opted for the Hasselblad X1D II to take these pictures (having only used it for 5 minutes before the day). It worked fine for posed portraits like this but for any action shots my trusty Nikon D800 did the job. Asides from a little vibrancy/ contrast tweak, there is no edit on these pictures - these are the devine colours you get from a Hasselblad digital medium format camera.

Superman, Clark Kent ? ➡️Swipe

This guy though, is truly one of the good ones. He started his video production company Studio 44 last year and I've been well impressed by the effort and attention to detail he's applied in all areas. I have the pleasure of freelancing for him from time to time and the end results he gets - helping businesses little and large to build their brand story - are truly stellar. Look him up if you need your video story!

I took these pictures during my test of the all new Sony a7S iii. It's a phenomenal camera in low light, action and all round 4K video king.

Another seascape from yesterday at Man Sands, slightly less cluttered, eye drawn in to the left side, complemented by some ‘empty’ space on the right. Lovely tones from the Fujifilm Velvia profile plus a little extra contrast. A little ‘dodging’ of the rocks (lightening) and a graduated filter applied for the sky. Voila, That’s the edit. I’m digging this one 😎

An impromptu photo of the boy hiding in the garden bamboo with camo face paint. I reckon we’re onto something here for a proper photo at another point. Snapped with the new Panasonic LUMIX G100 with the Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens - a dinky pairing.
