Ten years ago today, Jen and David flew from New Zealand to the opposite side of the planet to get married in Iceland.

Two kids from home, taking on a place that felt like Mars. I’ll be honest — I half expected it to be a case of trading one rugged coastline for another. It was not that.

Iceland broke every expectation I had. And so did these two.

We are given many conventions about marriage, and especially about weddings. How they should look, where they should be, who should be there, what should unfold. The courage to sit down together and draw something completely outside of that — that’s not something I come across every day. And I am so grateful when I do. Because it brings people like Jen and David into my life.

(Bonus easter egg: that’s me in slide 7, looking like I’m about to summit Everest — snapped by David between shots.

Ten years on, I’m heading back to New Zealand this season and I’m looking for more couples like these two. If that’s you, you know where to find me.

Happy decade J&D. Here’s to many more. x

I’d had the pleasure of photographing Holly many times before this day, she is clearly so loved and cherished as a a friend as she popped up as a bridesmaid and guest for me on so many other occasions. I think this is the best part of this job - connection, witnessing so many iterations of human relationships. Such a privilege to photograph her and Elliot for this day x

Stuti & Chet

I had a chuckle to myself when on Day three of the wedding festivities I caught myself saying to the bride “oh we have a day off tomorrow, I’ll see you Thursday”. How wonderful to belong to a culture where we celebrate for so many days. Suffice to say by the end of the week I felt like family, and it was such a joy to be welcomed with such open arms and the chance to document it all. The energy felt like it gained traction through the week, like a snowball picking up speed. I really didn’t think these guys could party any harder than they did on the Sangeet on Thursday night, but wow did they blow me out of the water at the reception on Saturday night. Also a personal record, I walked / ran / danced 35,000 steps on the wedding day alone!

A year ago today my eyes filled with tears and admittedly my stomach was fill to the brim with some of the best wedding food I’ve ever experienced. Alice & Elliots was a special one for sure, these two focused on two elements that we are so quick to de-prioritise in modern weddings - how people would feel and what they would remember. Which in this case, was a room of full hearts, laughter in every corner, plates of delicious food to share, brilliant conversations, and dancing all night long. Feeling very lucky I got to capture this one, and meet Alice along the way.

I looked across the dance floor and locked eyes with someone that would become steadfast in my life.

But let’s wind it back first….

A few years ago I photographed this beautiful destination wedding for Laura & Mike, who travelled from New York - to France, for a weekend with family and friends at a lovely Chateau.

Guests travelled mostly from the US and Mexico for this day, Laura also surprised her guests with a traditional Mariachi band who came from Paris (and were honestly one of the best I’ve seen outside of Mexico!). As always I mingled with everyone, however on this occasion I particularly hit it off with one of the brides close friends, Ayla. Ayla also happened to live in Berlin, as I do! Which in itself seemed a wild coincidence. We exchanged details before parting ways but as always, the summer and wedding season kept me out of the city and I never used that number.

Months passed and one Sunday afternoon I fancied some dancing, I decided to make my way to one of Berlins clubs. I’m happy to go alone, but I remember thinking on this occasion a friend could be nice - Ayla crossed my mind, but having never even asked her for coffee….asking her to go dancing in a somewhat chaotic environment as our first one on one seemed a bit much. So I hopped on my bike, cycled to the club, made my way in to the centre of the dance floor, and about 5 minutes into the set - who should I run into, but Ayla.

It was a moment of serendipity like no other - the ultimate meet-cute. And of course since that moment she has grown into one of my dearest friends.

We have become so accustomed to apps, but people used to meet at weddings! Not just romantically, friends, new neighbours, colleagues. It’s like a room of people who have already passed a TSA-precheck by someone that you already adore. Don’t waste them, talk to everyone, push outside your comfort zone, switch tables, chat to someone new. A best friend could be waiting.

Nikita & Dilan on a mix of digital and 35mm film

Shooting these little lifestyle sessions before a couples wedding is something I’ve become more and more passionate about as the years go on.

For most couples, engagement will be your shortest relationship status (generally!) and I’m always striving to make a series of images that really preserve this window of life to look back on. For Nikita & Dilan this is extra special because currently they live in London, but will marry back in New Zealand. I spent an afternoon in their gorgeous home and wandering the neighbourhood with them. Absolutely can’t wait for the wedding!

A moment for the cake…. Fun fact, if I shot your wedding between 2013 and 2019 you might remember that I DEFINITELY had a slice of your cake….because it was in my contract that I reserved the right to a piece of wedding cake at an appropriate moment during the evening. Later my lawyer made me take it out because he said there was no way this would stand up ( and also it seems a bit unhinged like I’m some trash panda waiting in the corner for you to finally cut the cake). Either way still here for the cake and glad it’s a bit of tradition that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere.

Two of the sweetest, most stylish, coolest cats in town, a little wander around Berlin on their wedding day before an intimate dinner with friends. This gal is an incredibly talented stylist so I knew her look would be next level, but she blew me away!
