Ten years ago today, Jen and David flew from New Zealand to the opposite side of the planet to get married in Iceland.
Two kids from home, taking on a place that felt like Mars. I’ll be honest — I half expected it to be a case of trading one rugged coastline for another. It was not that.
Iceland broke every expectation I had. And so did these two.
We are given many conventions about marriage, and especially about weddings. How they should look, where they should be, who should be there, what should unfold. The courage to sit down together and draw something completely outside of that — that’s not something I come across every day. And I am so grateful when I do. Because it brings people like Jen and David into my life.
(Bonus easter egg: that’s me in slide 7, looking like I’m about to summit Everest — snapped by David between shots.
Ten years on, I’m heading back to New Zealand this season and I’m looking for more couples like these two. If that’s you, you know where to find me.
Happy decade J&D. Here’s to many more. x
