🎓✨ As a new semester begins, meet Faiz, an international student at the University of Alberta. Originally from India and raised in Saudi Arabia, Faiz is pursuing a degree in Computing Science with a focus on Artificial Intelligence. Reflecting on his experience with the Year 1 Foundation Program, he shares:

"Transitioning to university was more difficult than I had expected. I worried about feeling homesick since I had no family or relatives nearby, but I made use of the many resources available, including clubs, fellow students, and supportive professors and staff, which helped me feel connected.

There are so many opportunities for you, whether you have an interest in arts, entrepreneurship, or just want to work; there's always something for everyone here in Edmonton.

The highlight of my first eight months at the University of Alberta in the Year 1 Foundation Program was being offered an on-campus job for a course I had taken. I became a marking assistant, a paid, part-time position that fit well into my schedule and was an excellent opportunity."

💚 Starting university can feel overwhelming, but Faiz's story is a reminder that building connections, getting involved, and making the most of the opportunities around you can make all the difference.

🎓✨Studying abroad is about so much more than earning a degree.

For Constance, moving from France to New York City meant stepping outside her comfort zone, gaining hands-on experience through an internship at the New York Stock Exchange, and growing both personally and professionally.

🇺🇸💙 As the fall semester approaches, we're looking back at Dana's experience as an international student in Boston and what she discovered during her time at Simmons University.

"I decided to study in Boston because it is a student city, and I knew I would be able to find new friends and share common interests with students just like me. Also, I found out that Boston is a pretty safe and calm city, so my parents are not worried about my safety as much as they might have been."

Like many international students, adjusting to a new country took time.

"After a few months, I was finally able to get used to this new life and new city. I believe that the most difficult and challenging part of the international student experience is getting used to these new conditions. You realize that you are so far from home and now need to be fully responsible for yourself.

Boston will always stay in my heart as a city in which, for the first time in my life, I realized that I am the main source of support and motivation for myself. It's where I experienced totally new emotions and spent my youth while studying at university. I think I will remember Boston as a city in which I was not afraid to grow up and develop in the direction I truly wanted.

By moving to the USA, I have had more opportunities to see the beauties of the world and to grow as a person. My hometown is quite small, but in the USA I can literally do whatever I want, and this is perfect as a student because I am so young and open to new experiences!"

If you're getting ready to start your own journey at Simmons University this fall, we hope Dana's story inspires you to make the most of everything Boston and university life have to offer. Wishing all of our new students the very best as they begin this exciting new chapter! ✨
