Martin Slidel's speech from the opening of my photography exhibition on 22.04.23 at Greenwich artFix:
"Being here reconnects me to a creative life from before Covid. Returning to the day job became a challenge. And I suspect it’s the same for many. Piroska was always part of that former creative life. It means a great deal to have my music performed this evening. Also, to see Kemi once more alongside my great friend Raie. Piroska has come a long way with her photography, and I know that the images on display will stick in everyone’s minds for years to come.
I once read that David Hockney felt alignment with Strauss’ notion of the artist as the provider of beauty. But I am not so sure. The artist – or more exactingly artistry – provides (as Berger indicates) a way of seeing. It is to perceive beauty unseen. It is a broader appreciation of the meaning of art.
Of course, art can be the creation of beauty. But should that necessitate any social norms. Here we arrive at the crossover between capture and creation. The difference between, for example, painting and photography. To paint is to create. To photograph is to capture. And possibly the other way around.
Piroska’s artistry lies in the unexpected. And, in turn, for the viewer not to expect it. It is to capture what is otherwise missed in the everyday. The images are amusing, quirky, poignant, poetic. There is a simple joy in the celebration of the pure form of visual constructs.
Post Covid, it strikes me, ever more pertinently, how busy and rushed city life is. There is never a moment to pause, reflect, look, observe. Piroska is the fish swimming against the tide.
As a musician, I create visual presentations to make contemporary music more accessible. I am fortunate to collaborate with Piroska on slide-shows combining her photographs with my music. ‘Mirror’ attempts to layer reflected motifs as echoed in the imagery. It is a lucky accident that the visual and aural narratives blend so effectively. However, it is the same dreamlike aspect of freezing time, and the nostalgic element of review, which lends itself so well to the visual format.
The creative spark is kept alive in the spirit of collaboration. So, once again, thank you, Piroska, for including my work as part of your event. And for putting together such an inspirational and fascinating exhibition. We will all retain special memories of this wonderful evening. Thank you." Martin Slidel https://martinslidel.art/
