One of my favourite shots I ever took — The Darkness at full throttle 🎸
This was one of those rare moments where everything just lined up. The lighting, the pose, the energy… you don’t get many like that.
The painful bit?
I later found out The Sun had actually called wanting to use this image… and I missed it.
Back then things weren’t quite as instant as they are now — no smartphones, no constant notifications. By the time I realised, the opportunity had gone.
I started out photographing bands around the NWOBHM era, built contacts through a fanzine, and stayed with imaging as the industry moved from film to digital.
At one point I even interviewed with Sounds magazine — but the reality of the job meant being London-based and turning work around overnight, which just wasn’t practical for me at the time.
So I took a different path.
I went back to study, completed a full-time course in Electronic Imaging, worked in the emerging world of digital media, and later graduated with a First Class degree in Digital Imaging.
One nice moment — Dan Hawkins liked this shot so much I had it blown up into a poster for him. I was told he loved it and planned to put it up in his studio (though I’ll never know if he did!).
Didn’t follow the path I expected.
Didn’t get the break.
But I got the shot.
